When it comes to the creature comforts that many now expect – like a spotless environment and attentive service – a significant effort is required to ensure these standards are met effectively and discreetly. This invisible yet palpable force propels industries like hospitality forward, as teams of housekeeping and guest service staff possess a range of skills to ensure visitors’ comfort and satisfaction. Although their efforts often go unnoticed by design, there are ongoing initiatives to equip young people with essential skills. Recently, a workshop in the Belait District provided both theoretical and practical training on delivering exceptional housekeeping and guest service, aimed at enhancing the guest experience. **EXPERT INSIGHTS** Organised by the Youth Development Unit of the Belait District Branch of the Youth and Sports Department, in collaboration with the Institute of Brunei Technical Education (IBTE) and V Plaza Hotel, the workshop attracted over 45 young participants from across the Belait District. Many of them displayed keen interest in the seemingly straightforward tasks of housekeeping and service skills. During the three-day workshop, attendees learnt the fundamentals of housekeeping and service. They began with the correct techniques for making a bed with bed sheets and explored the various tools used to maintain room cleanliness. Participants also gained insight into dining equipment, including glassware, cutlery and various types of napkins and wrappers, along with their roles in enhancing the dining experience. The workshop was conducted by Nur Badzlina Nabilah binti Ajang Subhan, a training instructor from the School of Hospitality and Tourism at the IBTE Sultan Saiful Rijal Campus. She explained that the workshop offered a foundational overview of housekeeping and service skills, highlighting how attention to even the smallest details can significantly improve customer satisfaction and enrich everyday life. “We will demonstrate to the participants the basics of housekeeping and service skills, from how to lay out a bed properly, to how to set the cutleries in a restaurant setting,” she explained. Although some activities in the workshop might seem straightforward, Nur Badzlina Nabilah emphasised that the essence of mastering housekeeping and service lies in a meticulous attention to detail and a commitment to addressing every nuance. “In housekeeping, it’s not merely about cleanliness,” she said. “It’s about focusing on the finer details to create an environment that is not only clean but also visually appealing and comfortable for guests.” Nur Badzlina Nabilah highlighted that even the fluffiness of pillows and thorough cleaning of hard-to-reach spots, like above door frames and windows, play a crucial role in achieving this standard. The same attention to detail applies to setting a table correctly. The workshop covered the careful arrangement of cutlery, dinner plates, and glasses, emphasising the importance of placing items in the order they will be used, starting from the outside and working inwards with each course. During the workshop, Nur Badzlina Nabilah also showed off the various simple yet elegant folds that can be made into napkins to elevate the dining experience for guests further. “This knowledge on table setting not only applies to fine dining situations but also to elevated events such as banquets and weddings, which provides a different and unique challenge in applying the same skills in a fast pace and hectic environment while delivering a consistent and quality service.” **ELEVATING DAILY LIFE** While some might view housekeeping and service skills as straightforward tasks, Nur Badzlina Nabilah presents them as essential elements that can enhance the quality of both guests’ and one’s own daily life. “Skills like bed making and table setting serve practical purposes in specific situations, but they also have valuable applications in everyday life,” she said. “By treating ourselves as we would a guest, we improve our own living environment.” For aspiring participants like Amal Nabilah binti Haji Mohd Zul-Atfi, the workshop was particularly inspiring. She found it enlightening to learn how to properly set up bedding and tableware according to international standards. “We discovered the proper techniques for making bed sheets, and it was surprising to learn that cutlery placement is not random but follows a specific order. This creates a well-presented table that enhances our daily lives.” Ultimately, Amal felt that the skills and knowledge gained have deepened her understanding and appreciation of the meticulous effort involved in housekeeping and service.
