Hmm, this is actually an
old news
back in 2021.Brunei withdrew and the host has been re-assigned to Malaysia. Sarawak is now trying to host it.
And Brunei NOC condemned the news last time for saying 'financial problems', saying instead the country was busy and has no time.

Can afford to spend on a lavish wedding and building unnecessarily lavish Istana with dozens of cars but can't afford to host SEA games. Pretty much shows where the priority is. RF>>>>>>>>>>country's development

I was alive when Brunei hosted the SEA games in 1999. At this rate I’m not sure if I’ll ever get to see Brunei host it in my lifetime….

Better to admit financial problem than to borrow money to host.

I’m very likely in the minority that thinks that Brunei hosting the SEA Games wouldn’t be a good thing in the medium to long term. Yes there would be an influx of interest and hopefully money into the country. And im sure the overall vibe in the country would be great. A lot of investment into the sporting venues and infrastructure. But it’s what happens after the event is a worry. Renovating the existing sporting facilities would cost millions. Would they still be in use after? Where will the athletes and media and tourists stay? Eg Ong sum ping apartments were used to house athletes for sea games before being turned into offices.
Then there’s the question of manpower. While short term employment would go up, the last time Brunei hosted sea games almost all the government personnel and also students were used for months in preparation. Disrupting daily operations and studies. Students had late night rehearsals. Government personnel working day and night too.
I’m fairly certain that hotels did good after the 1999 sea games because Brunei hosted apec in 2000. Unless we have another major event post Sea games I don’t see it as economically viable.

I found the information below and here's a summary
It's quite the buzz on Reddit! Users are debating Brunei's financial situation and its ability to host the SEA Games. Some think it's a priority for sports, while others question why a lavish wedding is prioritized over national events. Talk about a royal conundrum!
