His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, has consented to grant Compassionate Leave to teachers during school term sessions, effective January 1, 2025. The announcement was made during the 34th Teacher’s Day celebration at the International Convention Centre in Berakas on Thursday. In a titah, His Majesty emphasised the importance of addressing teachers’ welfare as a core driver for positive change within the education sector. The monarch expressed that ensuring the well-being of teachers is crucial for their career development and overall job satisfaction. He noted that educational transformation extends beyond technology and infrastructure; it also encompasses the well-being of educators and students alike. His Majesty pointed out that as of November 1, 2023, religious education has been integrated into the conventional education system, marking a significant transformation in the nation’s educational landscape. “This integration will optimise learning and broaden educational activities beyond the classroom, empowering students through diverse experiences that prepare them to navigate a complex world,” His Majesty added. His Majesty clarified that this does not imply the inferiority of religious education; all parties must understand the significance of this development. In addressing students’ readiness to face life’s challenges, His Majesty shared that Brunei participated in the 2022 Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) organised by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). His Majesty expressed gratitude for the progress made, noting improvements in all three assessed domains compared to the 2018 results. “Such advancements stem from the continuous support of our dedicated teachers. PISA findings indicate that students in Brunei feel their teachers are always ready to assist,” he said, underscoring the vital role teachers play in student success. His Majesty extended his congratulations to all teachers for their commitment, care, and sacrifices made for their students. The government remains dedicated to enhancing education both domestically and internationally through various scholarships. The monarch urged the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Religious Affairs to refine government scholarship policies to provide more opportunities for human resource development.
