Izah Azahari Like any other field of expertise, creativity is a skill requiring constant practice for growth and dedication to learn from those experiences – a necessary mentality to survive in the modern era as creativity could now be a career, a way of life, and a future for the strong-willed and ambitious creatives, said Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) Spectrum 2023: Lumen Director Nixlan Johan. He said this during the exhibition’s launch yesterday. According to Nixlan, the blending of talents showcased in the exhibition enables students to provide continued support for the growth of local creative industries. “These industries are not only crucial to our economy but also offer significant career opportunities,” he said. UBD Design and Creative Industries (DCI) programme under the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences launched its month-long UBD Spectrum 2023: Lumen exhibition yesterday, showcasing the works of 63 DCI students from various clusters. The clusters include fine arts, fashion design, digital arts and design, game development, product design, publications, filmography, photography, architecture and interior design as well as sculpture and installation. Through this, we hope to show our creativity and pride as creatives to the public,” said Nixlan. He added that their objective is to inspire and foster a sense of pride in the local creative community through the innovative projects, while at the same time aiming to communicate their mission of presenting a fresh perspective on creativity and its significance in the world to a broader audience. Meanwhile, DCI Programme Leader and Senior Assistant Professor Dr Rui Oliveira Lopes urged students to always be reliable individuals and look to universities as a platform to grow their skills further. The event also saw the official launching ceremony and sponsor’s certificate of appreciation presentation by the guest of honour. Organised by 63 students, UBD Spectrum is back with a fresher look, more creatives, and a wider variety of creative fields. Yet, there remains one goal in mind – to showcase the creatives and their talents that they have nurtured during their years in UBD. The discipline includes academic research, creative management and entrepreneurship. The exhibition together with the showcased projects are the result of individual and collective outlet that acts as means for students to express themselves creatively through their\ chosen field. As a proud successor of previous Spectrum forerunners, it is through the exhibition that the students want visitors to experience what the creative industry is about, as well as the potential and importance it has to offer. Moreover, they aspire to ignite individuality and imagination communicated through each of their works. There will also be Gallery Talks every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday throughout the month featuring students sharing their creative and artistic practice and the process behind creating the exhibited works. The exhibition is open to the public from today to June 9 at the Right Wing of Chancellor Hall, UBD.
