Ministry of Health’s (MOH) Sustainability Initiative was launched on Thursday, a pivotal moment in Brunei’s healthcare landscape. The initiative aims to establish a climate-resilient healthcare system while safeguarding both public health and the environment. Minister of Health Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mohammad Isham bin Haji Jaafar officiated the launch at Dewan Al-‘Afiah. Lead of the Sustainability Initiative Pengiran Dr Noor Affizan binti Pengiran Hj Abd Rahman underscored the importance of integrating sustainability into healthcare practices, stating, “Today marks a significant turning point in our journey towards establishing a climate-resilient and sustainable healthcare system.” Pengiran Dr Noor Affizan emphasised the urgent need for a coordinated response to climate change, noting that the health impacts are increasingly evident in Brunei. “Natural disasters, diseases, and environmental changes ultimately lead individuals to seek our care and support. PHOTOS: MUIZ MATDANI The MoH has established the Climate, Health, and Sustainability Taskforce, demonstrating the ministry’s commitment to ensuring a resilient healthcare system in the face of climate change. The taskforce will provide guidance and support while collaborating with all ministry members to achieve a shared vision. The Sustainability Initiative serves as the cornerstone of this transformation, aiming to integrate sustainable solutions into healthcare practices fully. Pengiran Dr Noor Affizan further shared a vision where electric vehicles become commonplace, and renewable energy sources like solar power stabilise electricity supply—similar to initiatives already implemented by the Temburong District Office. “All of this reinforces that sustainability is not a distant concept; it is already part of who we are,” she added. “We are excited to see these plans come to fruition and look forward to collaborating with everyone as we take the next steps toward a greener and healthier future. This mission extends beyond the Ministry of Health; it is a collective effort for all of us and future generations.
