ASEAN must strengthen each other’s health systems in dealing with health emergencies through motivated and trained health workers, well-maintained infrastructure, and reliable supply of medicines and technology. This was stressed by Minister of Health Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mohd Isham bin Haji Jaafar at the 16th ASEAN Health Ministers Meeting and Related Meetings held in Vientiane, Laos on August 8 and 9. Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mohd Isham added that ASEAN member countries need to strengthen regional institutions and mechanisms to obtain the benefits and the ease of response for each country. The minister also called on regional cooperation in the development of health involving other sectors, in line with the ASEAN One Health Joint Plan of Action, working with the economic sector to strengthen the supply chain, diversify the production methods of important medicines and work with emergency services such as AHA centres, to provide assistance to ASEAN member countries in need. The 16th ASEAN Health Ministers Meeting, themed ‘Transforming ASEAN Health Development Resilience in a New Context’, focused discussions on strengthening post-pandemic health system capacity to enhance regional resilience. ASEAN health ministers also agreed to a joint statement highlighting agreements on strengthening of the post-pandemic ASEAN health system and increasing regional resiliency against pandemic through increase cooperation and coordination, maximising ASEAN health sector mechanisms to advance health security; and health-related declarations and instilling innovation and use of digital health technology to increase delivery of healthcare and services as well as facilitating cross borders collaboration and exchange of information among ASEAN members states, including public-private partnerships to accelerate adoption and integration of digital health solutions. During the meeting, the World Health Organization (WHO) held an informal side meeting with the ASEAN health ministers in enhancing cooperation between WHO and ASEAN especially in aspects of health and well-being. The 2nd ASEAN Finance and Health Ministerial Meeting was also held in a hybrid format. Acting Minister of Finance and Economy II Pengiran Datin Seri Paduka Hajah Zety Sufina binti Pengiran Dato Paduka Haji Sani attended the meeting themed ‘ASEAN’s Path to Health and Finance Collaboration for Sustainable Health System Resilience’, which focused discussion on the cooperation between health and finance sectors. While in Laos, Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mohd Isham also held bilateral discussions with Singaporean Health Minister Ong Ye Kung and Lao Minister of Health Dr Bounfeng Phoummalaysith to exchange views on the development of health sectors in their countries and look at cooperation in health sector.
