A document aimed at strengthening the laboratory system in the country was launched by the government with a ceremony at the Ministry of Health yesterday. The Brunei Darussalam National Health Laboratory System (BDNHLS) document’s main objective is to create a trusted laboratory system that can fulfil the country’s health priorities. It outlined the framework for the system covering human, animal and plant health, as well as contain the National Health Laboratory policy, strategy and objectives of laboratory services. “Since Brunei Darussalam did not have any official guiding policy on laboratory systems on the national level to serve as a standardised reference for government and private laboratories, a comprehensive approach to strengthen laboratories throughout the country has been carried out in accordance to guidelines of the World Health Organization, World Organisation For Animal Health and internationally recognised standards such as ISO 15189 and ISO 17025,” said Minister of Health Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mohd Isham bin Haji Jaafar in a speech. In the early stage, the establishment and implementation of BDNHLS will strengthen the sharing information mechanism and lab expertise through the Joint National Taskforce for Zoonotic Diseases.” The minister added that a national mechanism for licensing private laboratories will also be created, with the BDNHLS used as a reference. The minister said the Brunei Darussalam National Health Laboratory System Committee (BDNHLS-C) was established to oversee the implementation of the BDNHLS objectives and policies. He added that the committee is chaired jointly by deputy permanent secretaries from both ministries and comprised representatives from government and private sectors. Yesterday’s ceremony saw the launch of the document by Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mohd Isham and Minister of Primary Resources and Tourism Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Abdul Manaf bin Haji Metussin. Copies of the document were handed over to stakeholders by Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Abdul Manaf before the ministers toured an exhibition on the system. – James Kon
