About 47 new scoliosis cases per 100,000 of the adolescent population are identified annually, according to research on adolescent idiopathic scoliosis in the Sultanate. Patients with the condition, which was found four times more common in girls than boys, did not report any symptoms and do not require surgery. Minister of Health Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mohd Isham bin Haji Jaafar shared these figures and report in his remarks at the launching ceremony of Scoliosis Week 2024 at the Pantai Jerudong Specialist Centre (PJSC) building in Jerudong yesterday. “We have also found the health-related quality of life and self-image is lower in Brunei adolescents with untreated idiopathic scoliosis, particularly those with moderate and severe scoliosis, compared to those who are unaffected. Therefore, the care towards the psychosocial aspect of patients with scoliosis is just as important for their well-being,” said Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mohd Isham. “Subsets of patients, particularly those with Cobb angles more than 45 degrees usually undergo surgery. Since March 2019, surgery on 85 idiopathic scoliosis cases have been performed successfully at PJSC with optimal correction and no permanent complications incurred,” said the minister, who is also Chairman of the PJSC Board of Directors. “Patients stay an average of three to four days after surgery and some even go home on the second day post-surgery. The patients’ and parents’ satisfaction with PJSC’s management have been positive and all were able to get back into their normal routine between six to 12 months post-surgery. This is a testament to the good work that can be achieved with a holistic team-based, multidisciplinary approach towards patient care,” said the minister. With a focus on fostering awareness and understanding of scoliosis in the Brunei community and continuous education among clinical practitioners, PJSC will commemorate Scoliosis Week 2024 with a unique convergence of medical education and patient engagement with a Scoliosis Workshop and Live Surgery Programme for doctors and an Appreciation Day for scoliosis patients. As part of the programme, participants will have the opportunity to observe an anatomical specimen workshop and understand the equipment and skill behind scoliosis surgeries. The event will also feature a Live-Surgery Workshop – where PJSC is set to achieve a historic milestone with its very first live-surgery workshop observed by participants and a Patient Engagement Day to honour the strength and resilience of individuals facing scoliosis.
