His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam graced the launch of two books, The Ministry of Education Strategic Plan Book 2023-2027 and the Education Resilience: Brunei Darussalam’s COVID-19 Journey photobook during the 33rd Teacher’s Day celebration at the International Convention Centre, Berakas yesterday. The Ministry of Education Strategic Plan Book 2023-2027, coordinated by the Ministry of Education’s (MoE) Strategic Enterprise Performance and Delivery Unit (SEPaDU) and the Department of Higher Education, is a manifestation of the ministry’s commitment in realising Brunei Vision 2035 through providing quality and holistic education. With the vision “Quality Education, Progressive Nation”, the strategic plan sets forth a roadmap to foster educational excellence, strengthen the capacity of the education system as a whole, support the capabilities and diversity of talents responsive to a changing and dynamic education ecosystem for the next five years. The strategic plan charts a course towards three strategic goals: Goal 1 – Nurture Future Ready Learners; Goal 2 – Enhance Innovative Education Ecosystem; and Goal 3 – Build Up Human Resources. These can be used as a guide to departments, schools, colleges and institutions under the MoE to identify what needs to be done to meet the goals. It also aims to show appreciation for educators in ensuring that teaching and learning continued when the country and the world were affected by the calamity. The photos captured the moments and events that happened through pictorial storytelling, starting from the closure of schools, the de-escalation phase and the recovery of curriculum time. The photobook also shows the atmosphere surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic which presented a major challenge to the education system around the world, including the Sultanate, which showed a high degree of resilience during the pandemic. Among the important factors emphasised in the book is the commitment of the Government of His Majesty to ensure that teaching and learning resumed even in difficult circumstances, supported by high commitment from the stakeholders, including parents and students. The high-resilience education was also the result of joint efforts through a whole-of-nation approach. The book aims to be a source of reference for future generations. Head of Policy and Planning at the Department of Planning, Development and Research at the MoE Dr Naasirah binti Abdullah Teo said the idea to publish the book was to share the journey and experience during the COVID-19 pandemic. She added that the book also acts as a record to remember “what had been done to ensure the continuity of learning and teaching in the country”. She said, “If it is not documented, it will be forgotten. But if we present it as a photobook journey, it will reminds us what we went through during that time.” Also present at the book launch were Minister of Education Datin Seri Setia Dr Hajah Romaizah binti Haji Mohd Salleh; Permanent Secretary (Higher Education) at the MoE Dr Haji Azman bin Ahmad; Permanent Secretary (Core Education) at the MoE Dr Shamsiah Zuraini Kanchanawati binti Haji Tajuddin; Deputy Permanent Secretary (Higher Education) at the MoE Dr Chin Wei Keh; Deputy Permanent Secretary (Core Education) at the MoE Aliuddin bin Haji Abdul Rahman; heads of departments as well as officers and staff of the MoE. – Rokiah Mahmud
