The basic focus of the Ministry of Transport and Infocommunications (MTIC) remained on guaranteeing safety in the transportation sector and the cyber realm, increasing public well-being by providing services of fast, clean and leveraging technology and simplify means to support the development of a sustainable country. This was said by Minister of Transport and Infocommunications Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Shamhary bin Pengiran Dato Paduka Haji Mustapha during a meeting with Legislative Council (LegCo) members, where he shared the ministry’s progress status in the implementation of key performance indicators (KPI) under the Refresh MTIC Strategic Plan 2025 and main focus of each departments as well as the direction by 2025. The minister said the MTIC is focusing on formulating strategies and improvement projects for public transport services. “It is definitely an aspiration to be achieved, in reviewing and formulating of more comprehensive strategies, especially in the preparation of projects under the 12th National Development Plan (RKN-12) by prioritising an efficient and accessible connectivity system. “To achieve this, improvement on strategies and objectives of the Land Transport Master Plan, Plan Actions include the *Blueprint for Vision 2035 Sustainable and Inclusive Land Transportation System for Brunei Darussalam* has been made more viable with focus on improving connectivity and reliability of core network service of public bus transportation, improving the e-hailing service, ride sharing and taxi, and providing an intelligent transportation management system that leverages technology through vehicle monitoring systems and passenger information.” ![](https://media.everythingbrunei.com/public/3UbJuQwRupUNIlpZUgEK1-ig-TD4nMjj2PTWSjUI2Kp.jpeg) Minister of Transport and Infocommunications Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Shamhary bin Pengiran Dato Paduka Haji Mustapha and Legislative Council members in a group photo. PHOTO: JAMES KON Findings from the updates, he said, “have also become the basis for public transportation system projects under National Development Plan with the focus on core initiatives covering six main objectives – increasing connectivity, increasing reliability, invest in infrastructure, leveraging technologies, reforming the industrial structure and regulating public transport”. The minister said the ministry, through the infocommunications authority, functions as a catalyst towards the launch of 5G service in the country. The availability of 5G service will open up opportunity for users to increase the use of virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR) and Internet of Things (IoT) in advancing transportation, health, education and agriculture sectors, he added. The minister said, ”Competition regulatory measures for infocommunications sector have also been given attention, whereby the Authority for Info-communications Technology Industry of Brunei Darussalam (AITI) has implemented a market review for new competition measures in telecommunications sector by providing regulations’ code of practice and advisory guidelines for telecommunication services providers such as the ‘Code of Practice for Telecommunications sector and Competition Law Code.” To achieve the KPI under the Refresh MTIC Strategic Plan 2025 related to the ‘Top 40 United Nations (UN) E-Government Strategy Survey by 2025’, the E-Government National Centre (EGNC) released digital services guidelines in September 2023 as an effort to ensure digital services, mobile digital services and government website follow the best practice standards. The minister added that the Cyber Security Brunei (CSB) is actively implementing the requirements stipulated in the Cybersecurity Order 2023 including to ensure the critical information infrastructure (CII) provides essential services and helps to build the country’s capacity in the development of a cybersecurity ecosystem. LegCo member Yang Berhormat Chong Chin Yee led the 20-member LegCo delegation. Meanwhile, Permanent Secretary at the MTIC Ir Haji Mohammad Nazri bin Haji Mohammad Yusof shared the development and direction of the Refresh MTIC Strategic Plan 2025, including the KPI. The meeting served as an annual discussion to exchange views and as a continuation to a series of working visits at the Brunei Darussalam Meteorological Department, the Land Transport Department, AITI, EGNC and CSB. – James Kon
