As part of Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam’s (BIBD) commitment to employee wellness, and in conjunction with Breast Cancer Awareness Month, BIBD in collaboration with Pantai Jerudong Specialist Centre (PJSC) held a cancer awareness talk at the BIBD Headquarters yesterday. Over 50 BIBD employees attended the talk which focussed on common types of cancers in both men and women, symptoms and details of how to conduct breast self examination (BSE). The talks were delivered by consultant medical oncologist Dr Raden Mas Jeffri bin Raden Mas Ismail from The Brunei Cancer Centre (TBCC) as well as senior medical officer at the Early Detection and Cancer Prevention Services at TBCC Dr Nur Sadrina binti Haji Marsidi. The talk also included a sharing session from a former cancer patient, and a patient who is still going through her cancer journey. In 2020, cancer caused about one in five deaths among citizens and permanent residents in the Sultanate. BIBD’s Chief Human Resources Officer Habibah binti Haji Harry said, “Our people are our greatest asset. We have always invested in programmes and initiatives to ensure their health and well-being, including comprehensive medical check-ups for all staff, Takaful health coverage, access to an on-site gym as well as free gym usage at a prestigious local gym. “In addition to this, we also have a Sports and Recreational Club as part of efforts to encourage a healthy lifestyle and work-life balance. “At BIBD, we also believe that mental health and wellness is as important as our physical health; during the pandemic, regular motivation talks were delivered virtually and all our employees had access to stress management and counselling services.” She said, “This is part of our support towards achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, specifically Goal 3, in ensuring good health and well- being. We would also like to extend our appreciation to PJSC for their support of our wellness initiative.” BIBD’s wellness culture can be seen in the recently established Corporate Platoon, an auxiliary agent to the Brunei Darussalam Red Crescent Society (BRC). The platoon, comprising volunteer members of BIBD staff, have undergone and completed training recognised by the Safety, Health and Environment National Authority (SHENA) which is the Occupational First Aid Certification Training (OFAC) and a first-of-its kind Wellness Training Programme in Brunei certified by the Ministry of Health (MoH). The platoon also conducts health and wellness checks for BIBD staff. The initiative also reflects BIBD’s strong commitment and readiness as a partner in progress to support the MoH’s efforts in reducing the incidents of non-communicable diseases, in line with the foundational values of Maqasid Syariah and towards achieving a high quality of life, as outlined in Brunei Vision 2035.
