The transition imperative advocated in the ASEAN Taxonomy has gained significant traction globally and incorporated into the respective ASEAN member states’ taxonomies. Collectively, these efforts aim to support an orderly and just transition within the ASEAN region. This was said by Brunei Darussalam Central Bank (BDCB) Deputy Managing Director of Monetary Operations, Development and International Hajah Noorrafidah binti Sulaiman during her keynote address at a webinar on the ASEAN Taxonomy Board (ATB) meeting at the Centrepoint Hotel in the capital recently. As the ATB Chair. Hajah Noorafidah underscored the importance of the webinar as an avenue to harness the potential of the ASEAN Taxonomy, facilitating a transition towards inclusivity and sustainability. The taxonomy serves as an overarching guide to assessing sustainable activities across ASEAN, complementing each ASEAN member country’s sustainable finance initiatives. Earlier, BCDB in collaboration with the Sustainable Finance Institute Asia (SFIA), hosted the ATB meeting, chaired by Hajah Noorafidah and attended by ATB members from BDCB, Securities Commission Malaysia, Bank Negara Malaysia, Monetary Authority of Singapore, Myanmar’s Ministry of Planning and Finance Securities and Exchange Commission of Philippines, Lao Securities Commission Office, Bank of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Ministry of Economy and Finance of Cambodia, and National Bank of Cambodia. Also in attendance were representatives from the SFIA as the host of the ATB, as well as ATB representatives from Otoritas Jasa Keuangan, Indonesia and Securities Commission Vietnam, who attended the meeting virtually. The meeting provided an opportunity for the ATB to discuss the progress of ASEAN Taxonomy Version 3 published on March 27. The publication marks a significant milestone in the development of the region’s overarching taxonomy to advance sustainable finance practices. There was also a presentation by Managing Director of Securities Commission Malaysia Datin Azalina Adham on the recently-published ASEAN Taxonomy Version 3, which introduces technical screening criteria for two additional focus sectors – transportation and storage; and construction and real estate. The event also saw a panel discussion moderated by SFIA Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Eugene Wong with Mizuho Financial Group General Manager Shinichi Tsunoda, Director from Asia Investor Group on Climate Change and Malaysia Green Building Council CEO Mitchel Gelber as panelists. The panel discussed the necessary factors for a just transition in ASEAN and explored the roles of various sectors in ASEAN towards achieving net zero or green targets.
