Brunei saw a concerning rise in road accidents in 2021 and the first quarter of 2022. A total of 2,812 accidents were recorded in 2021, leading to 16 fatalities, while 315 accidents occurred in the first three months of 2022, with seven proving fatal. Statistics reveal that male drivers aged 18-38 are most likely to be involved in accidents resulting in injury or death. Common causes include running red lights, not wearing seatbelts, and disregarding traffic regulations. The National Road Safety Council (MKKJR) is taking proactive steps to improve road safety through infrastructure improvements, public awareness campaigns, and stricter enforcement of traffic laws.
