***Young volunteers demonstrate their ability to transform lives, communities*** As the nation and the world continue to grapple with rapid societal changes, a remarkable number of young Bruneians are actively engaging in volunteerism to effect positive change, especially within their communities. With the world economy still heading towards a slow growth recovery, a rising tide of Bruneian youth are channelling their energy to help those less fortunate, through innovative initiatives that not only inspire compassion but cultivate the spirit of giving back. PHOTO: DANIEL LIM This collaborative project, spearheaded by Minda Youth Movement and BSP (Brunei Shell Petroleum Company Sdn Bhd) Care, with support from the Youth and Sports Department of the Belait District Branch, serves as a crucial support system for families navigating financial hardships. It provides less fortunate households with access to essential daily necessities and school supplies for their children, all free of charge. PHOTO: DANIEL LIM Volunteers then meticulously sort through the contributions, ranging from canned goods and toiletries to backpacks and notebooks, ensuring that the donated items are of high quality and suitable for distribution to those in need. “We had members of the public, even some from the Brunei-Muara District coming to donate necessities and school equipment to aid in the good cause. “We also have volunteers from the Brunei-Muara District who have joined to help make the community store an enjoyable experience for the visiting families.” At the heart of these community stores is the unwavering dedication of the young volunteers who oversee their operations. Driven by a commitment to bring about positive change, these individuals invest their time and efforts to ensure that no one in their community is overlooked or left behind. Amidst the increasing prevalence of volunteerism among youth, Nurhasya Adlina expressed hope that more young people will be inspired to engage in acts of kindness during their spare time. This inspired me to join and contribute,” she recalled. She added that her volunteering experience also provided valuable insights into how a community store can alleviate the burdens of those in need. “Volunteering for the community store gives you a first-hand understanding of how the donated necessities directly assist the less fortunate. “Witnessing the appreciation and happiness resulting from small acts of kindness reinforces how meaningful these gestures can be for those in need.” Beyond addressing immediate material needs, the community store also serve as hubs for positive social interaction, fostering a sense of belonging among families who visit, reassured by the knowledge that their community cares for their well-being. The volunteering youth not only actively assist visiting families to assist them during their time at the store but they also aim to establish an understanding of the challenges, with the hope that the support provided extends beyond the store shelves. The impact of these initiatives extends far beyond the directly involved youths, as their efforts can inspire a ripple effect, motivating other young people to consider similar ventures. The sense of purpose derived from helping others nurtures a strong community spirit and solidarity, ultimately contributing to the development of a more compassionate society. In an era where societal challenges can appear overwhelming, the emergence of youth-driven initiatives, like the Projek Minda Prihatin community store, showcase the remarkable potential for youth-led societal change.
