Their posts vividly captured the unfolding scene, starting from a small plume of smoke and progressing to falling ash. The once-clear backdrop gradually transformed into a growing haze. On the same day, the Lumut Bypass Highway was closed due to localised haze persisting in several areas of the Belait District. A viral video showed the location from a commuter’s perspective, with a vehicle in front quickly disappearing into a wall of smoke, reminiscent of a scene from a horror movie. The latest pollutant standard index (PSI) at 3.45pm yesterday, as reported by the Brunei WX mobile application based on data from the Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation (JASTRe), showed Brunei-Muara and Belait districts recording PSI readings of 75 and 70, respectively. The day before, only Belait District was in the moderate level with a reading of 59. Meanwhile, Tutong and the Temburong districts showed a good level of PSI with 49 and 36, respectively. Given these readings, the Ministry of Health advised the public that moderate PSI readings (between 50 and 100) can cause minor health effects such as coughs, eye irritations, and runny noses. In light of the haze, it is crucial to take precautions to protect your health. Here are some tips and tricks to stay safe during hazy conditions: **Reduce outdoor activities** The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends reducing outdoor activities during hazy conditions, especially for sensitive groups such as children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory conditions. Prolonged exposure to haze can lead to respiratory symptoms and exacerbate existing health conditions. Look for eye drops that are specifically formulated for dry or irritated eyes and do not contain preservatives, as preservatives can further irritate sensitive eyes. **Moisturise dry skin** Prolonged exposure to haze can dry out the skin, leading to irritation and discomfort. Using a lotion or moisturising cream can help hydrate the skin and restore moisture barrier function. Look for products that contain ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, or ceramides, which help attract and retain moisture in the skin. With the haze situation in the Sultanate essential to prioritise health and well-being, especially during such environmental challenges.
