đ Susan Abulhawa đ
Life caught up with me so I missed out on yesterdayâs #readpalestineweek entry. But today Iâm bringing two books, and fiction for a change!
Susan Abulhawa can do no wrong. âAgainst the Loveless Worldâ was a 2022 favourite, and hereâs what I wrote about it back then:
âMy favourite book of the year so far. This is a stunningly evocative tale of how political, social and spiritual oppression piloted Nahrâs, a Palestinian immigrant born and raised in Kuwait, life trajectory.
Narrated by a sad protagonist with an unwavering moral compass, this is about exile, prostitution and unjust incarceration; about the Palestinian plight and suffering as a refugee treated as second class citizens; about the effects of being a woman (with devastating beauty) in a cruel, misogynistic world.
I have tired of trying to write a review worthy of this incredible book. All I can say is that Susan Abulhawa is such a masterful and elegiac storyteller, this will stay with me for a long time.â
I still have fond memories of Nahr, a fictional character, and thatâs why Iâm convinced Abulhawaâs in a class of her own.
