Muhammad Ishqal Ezairy @ Abdul Mateen bin Mohammad Shahruni of Institut Tahfiz Al-Quran Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah (ITQSHHB), with a score of 94.5 points, and Nurul Husnul Fikriah binti Haji Sudirman of Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Hajah Saleha Girls Arabic Religious Secondary School (SUAMPRIPAHS), with 87.5 points, were named champions in the Al-Quran (Tarannum) Reading Competition for the Ba category. In second place for Ba male category was Muhammad Aqiel Emani bin Haji Yusra of Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Arabic School with 84 points, with Mohammad Luthfi Rafa’ie bin Mohammad Amli of Belait Arabic School in third place with 80.5 points and Muhammad Syahmi bin Muhammad Norawi of Ma’ahad Islam Brunei taking fourth place with 80 points. In the Ba female category, Nur’aliyah Amani binti Muhammad Al-Ameen of ITQSHHB in second place with 79 points, Dayangku Nurruwadiah binti Pengiran Mohammad Aliuddin of SUAMPRIPAHS in third with 74 points and Amiratul Bazilah binti Mohammad Ariffin of Ma’had Islam Brunei in fourth with 66 points. Acting Deputy Permanent Secretary (Policy and Religious) at the Ministry of Religious Affairs Dr Haji Hardifadhillah bin Haji Mohd Salleh presented prizes at a ceremony organised by the Islamic Studies Department (JPI) at the Jerudong Religious School surau yesterday. The Alif female category was won by Nur Damia Fatihah binti Mohamad Aji, also from Second Battalion Tutong Religious School scoring 93 points, followed by ‘Alyaa Rifqah binti Mohamad Azmi of Pengiran Anak Puteri Muta-Wakkilah Hayatul Bolkiah Religious School in second with 88 points. Hadizatul Zahrah binti Haji Muhd Azzatul Amin of Beribi Gadong Religious School with 79.5 points and Nur Amal Mellyzza binti Muhammad Syukri of Binturan Penanjong Religious School with 79.25 were in third and fourth places. The Arabic schools Alif category was open to Year 10, Year 11 and pre-university students of Arabic schools and ITQSHHB, while the Ba category was for Year 7, Year 8 and Year 9 students. Some 24 participants – four male and four female for each category – competed in the finals, which were conducted a day earlier and received their prizes at the ceremony yesterday. The competition aimed to produce more quality Al-Quran readers to heed the nation’s call in becoming a Zikir Nation and towards a new generation of qari and qariah at national and international levels. – Lyna Mohamad
