Fadhil Yunus Various sporting associations affiliated under the Brunei Darussalam National Olympic Council (BDNOC) are organising clinics and roadshows targetting youth and the younger generation to enhance the development of sport in the country. The series of roadshows and clinics envision promoting or popularising the sport by informing the public about the related benefits and opportunities, and complementing the existing pool of athletes by encouraging more participation and involvement from enthusiasts. Netball is one of the sports in the country that actively organises clinics as part of efforts to introduce and expand the sport to more players, especially in schools. In 2019, the Brunei Netball Association (BNA) organised the School Holiday Netball Camp involving individuals aged below 21. The netball camp aimed to provide expertise, knowledge and ability to children and new players to understand and take interest in the sport. Besides the technical skills and fundamentals that had been taught, the session also helped children to build their confidence, mental endurance as well as competency and fitness. ![](https://media.everythingbrunei.com/public/w1MFtuuILeHTmPSk_Ln6r-fn3T2SDJbnJoK9CF35MHy.jpeg) In addition, the netball camp hoped to find players who have potential and for them to be trained continuously. The School Holiday Netball Camp returned for another edition in 2021 with dozens of young players separated into various stations focussing on a wide range of drills. The camp provided enthusiasts basic training concerning techniques found in netball. The first session of the camp incorporated circuit training designed to build strength and footwork, ball and team drills to help increase upper body strength and familiarise participants with the art of catching and throwing. Participants also engaged in matches to have a feel of a real-life atmosphere and were provided an opportunity to apply the techniques they had been taught during the training camp’s earlier stages. Such an initiative to promote netball on a national scale was also apparent with the launch of the Netball Kitani Roadshow in August 2022. This was perhaps the biggest campaign to date as the Brunei Netball Association joined forces with the Sports School Council, Co-Curricular Education Department (JPKK), Sports School and Netacademy. Through the roadshow, schoolchildren and teenagers were able to improve their soft skills and build self-confidence. Meanwhile, the Brunei Darussalam Hockey Association (BDHA) has also made efforts to promote and encourage the development of hockey after, having held a clinic as part of the Fun Game Mixed Junior Tournament in September 2019. The clinic provided opportunities to young local players to venture into hockey as an activity during the school holidays. In addition, following the introduction of new competition rules and regulations in pencak silat, the Brunei Darussalam Pencak Silat Federation (PERSIB) held a seminar and informed their community, especially its athletes and coaches, to prepare them for future international meets. The seminar helped gain a better understanding of the new regulations, which included allowing the execution of shots that was previously prohibited. In November 2020, a running clinic organised by AKIF Media and Marketing Event with the support of the Brunei Darussalam Athletics Federation (BDAF) was held at the Lecture Theatre of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium. The event helped participants enhance their preparations for the UBDCorp Larian Harapan 2020. During the clinic, BDAF President Major (Rtd) Talip bin Haji Mohd Tahir highlighted the key components of physical fitness – strength, stamina, suppleness, speed and skill in their repertoire. A month later, the Brunei Darussalam Karate Federation (BRUKAF) held the first-ever BRUKAF Technical Seminar 2020. The seminar aimed to disseminate the latest World Karate Federation (WKF) kata and kumite competition rules to its members and to ensure BRUKAF technical officers comprising national referees, judges, coaches and clubs’ instructors understand and apply the rules accordingly. In March 2021, the Brunei Darussalam National Badminton Association (BDNBA) organised the ‘Smash it Up’ Badminton Training Camp in the Belait and Temburong districts. Open to teenagers aged below 17, the training camp aimed to introduce the basics of badminton, hone skills and nurture players to join local and international competitions. Furthermore, the Brunei Darussalam National Lawn Bowls Association also conducted a workshop on lawn bowling particularly catered to enthusiasts in the Belait District. Carrying the same purpose, the Brunei Darussalam Petanque Federation (BDPF) held an introductory petanque workshop for Youth Transformation Community Club members.
