Since its inception in August 2020, Cyber Security Brunei’s (CSB) mission is to safeguard every aspect of cybersecurity, particularly the protection of Critical Information Infrastructure (CII) in the Sultanate. The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) CyberDrill could not come at a more appropriate time as the country’s Cyber Security Law was enacted last year, said Interim Commissioner of CSB Shamsul Bahri bin Haji Kamis. He said this in his welcoming remarks, during the 2024 Regional Asia-Pacific CyberDrill at the Radisson Hotel in the capital yesterday. He added, “One of the commitments and obligations of CIIs under this law is to take part in the mandatory cyber exercises that CSB will organise in the near future. Its purpose under the law is to test the state of readiness of owners of different CIIs in responding to significant cybersecurity incidents. “The experience and knowledge will enable our various teams in CSB and also the local CII and non-CII organisations to enhance readiness in carrying out our own national cyber exercise sometime next year.” The three-day event, jointly organised by CSB and the ITU, will continue until tomorrow, is aligned with the ITU Regional Initiative for Asia and the Pacific in enhancing communication, incident response capabilities, and collective efforts among Asia-Pacific Computer Security Incident Response Teams (CSIRTs) to mitigate cyber threats. PHOTO: JAMES KON Key highlights of the conference include ‘Global Cybersecurity Index (GCI) 2024 Insights: A presentation by the ITU Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific’, delved into key findings, lessons, and challenges in the region as well as a panel discussion on ‘State of Cybersecurity in Asia-Pacific Region’ featuring experts from CSB, INTERPOL, Palau, and Mongolia explored the current cybersecurity landscape. Representatives from Brunei, the Philippines, Thailand and Nepal exchanged insights on national cybersecurity strategies and best practices in a roundtable session. The event also offers parallel training sessions in Building Malware Analysis Capability for CSIRTs: Led by the Forum of Incident Response and Security Teams (FIRST). The technical training equips participants with advanced malware analysis techniques and National Cyber Crisis Management conducted by the ITU Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific focusing on effective crisis response planning and execution. The concluding days of the event will feature intensive CyberDrill exercises, simulating real-world cyberattacks. Around 100 individual including 53 local participants will engage in these exercises. By fostering collaboration and knowledge sharing, the CyberDrill aims to enhance the region’s collective cybersecurity response capabilities. By bringing together regional stakeholders, the 2024 Regional Asia-Pacific CyberDrill aims to strengthen cybersecurity cooperation, promote knowledge sharing, and ultimately contribute to a more secure digital future for the Asia-Pacific region. Attendees also include representatives from 21 countries in the ASEAN region, the Pacific Islands and the Indian subcontinent, including Bangladesh, Bhutan, Fiji, Kiribati, Maldives, Mongolia, Nepal, Palau, Samoa, Sri Lanka, Tonga and Vanuatu. – James Kon
