While there is no matching the conventional mechanics of a fossil fuel vehicle to electric vehicles (EVs), it boasts a different kind of elec-trifying experience. Especially when it’s a Porsche. As one of the pioneers of the hybrid engine, Porsche has led the world in sustainability even before it became the talk of climate activists and the world in general today. Despite the rising tide of green standards globally, Porsche stepped up to the plate through the power-packed Taycan and its successor, the Taycan Cross Turismo (CT), a shooting brake of the EV kind. Adorned in a captivating electric green hue, exuding a commanding presence in the Porsche Brunei showroom is the all-new Porsche Taycan CT 4S, which I had the opportunity to test drive. The hybrid sports vehicle stood poised, a vision of raw electrical power. Plugged in and charged, it awaited the day’s highway triumph with quiet confidence. The Taycan CT 4S can go from zero to 100 kilometres per hour (kph) in 3.3 seconds, with a top speed of 250kph, rivalling its fuelled siblings. PHOTO: RAFI ROSLI The all-wheel drive changes to rear-biased distribution and is dynamically controlled and the battery’s cooling and heating strategy is tailored to ensuring maximum performance. The cooling air flaps are open while the chassis set-up, including rear axle steering and PDCC, is optimised for maximum race track performance, remaining permanently in the lowest position (22 millimetres (mm) lower). Coupled with the Sports Plus mode optimising its suspensions, the car surged forward, embodying the essence of Porsches – a supercar effortlessly reaching 200 kph on the straight road in Kampong Katok. The Taycan CT’s three-chamber air suspension provides a wide range of spring rates allowing the chassis to be adjusted to a low basic spring rate and therefore, made more comfortable. As soon as necessary, the spring rate is electronically adjusted in a fraction of a second – for instance when accelerating and braking – and roll movements are reduced via volume control. The air suspension boasts a standard Smartlift function, empowering users to program the system for automatic height adjustments at specific spots like road humps or driveways. These positions are easily stored using the chassis button. Additional levels beyond the normal setting are available, depending on the chosen driving mode. Before I could breach the 200kph mark on the gauge, I swiftly applied the brakes, mindful of my speed on the public road. The optional high-performance Porsche Surface Coated Brake (PSCB), a standard feature on the Taycan Turbo Cross Turismo, piqued my interest. Its tungsten carbide coating on cast-iron brake discs enhances braking power and wear resistance while minimising brake dust on the rims. Particularly advantageous for electric vehicles, the PSCB ensures gleaming brake discs due to its exceptional resistance to corrosion. For the Turbo S model, the Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake (PCCB) takes centre stage. Equipped with lightweight ceramic composite brake discs measuring 420mm in the front and 410mm in the rear, this system maintains consistent braking behaviour and feel, irrespective of the battery’s temperature or charge level. **COMFORT** I took the Taycan for a brief spin on gravel and sand near the Tarindak de Pantai area to test its Gravel mode, which significantly enhances the vehicle’s capability on rough roads. This mode finely tunes various components, optimising power delivery and control precision specifically for unpaved surfaces. The two-speed transmission ensures precise torque control for superior traction, while the all-wheel drive system is fine-tuned for light off-road terrain. Additionally, torque distribution is optimised to maximise traction on challenging surfaces, especially during slow-speed manoeuvres on uphill gradients. Notably, the standard rear-axle differential on the Turbo and Turbo S models provides increased locking torque for improved traction, particularly in low-speed articulation situations. The cooling system for drive components is performance-oriented. Gravel mode also influences the setup of springs and dampers, along with key systems like Porsche Stability Management (PSM), Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV Plus), and Porsche Traction Management (PTM). These comprehensive adjustments make the Taycan well-equipped to tackle challenging terrains with confidence and ease. During the test drive, I forgot to enable the sound feature. However, at low speeds, the sound automatically activates as required by law. What I discovered was the Porsche Electric Sport Sound, which purposefully minimises disruptive noises and amplifies harmonious, emotive sounds in sync with the vehicle’s actions. This meticulous composition creates a sound experience unique to Porsche: a clear declaration of its electric drive yet undeniably authentic to the Porsche essence. **INTERIOR HIGHLIGHTS** For its interior, the Taycan CT boasts adaptive front sports seats (18-way, electric) with a memory package, featuring steering wheel adjustment for rake and reach, front and rear seat heating, a leather-free two-tone interior, Sport Chrono package (optional compass instead of clock) including a GT multifunction sports steering wheel with mode switch, Race-Tex roofliner, BOSE® surround sound system, and a spacious luggage compartment ranging from 405 to 1,171 litres in volume. Given its versatility for various weather conditions, it’s understandable to inquire about the air conditioning. The Taycan CT features electronically controlled, louvre-less air vents integrated into the fully automatic air conditioning system. Additionally, an optional heat pump efficiently warms the car’s interior using waste heat from the powertrain, enhancing the vehicle’s range, especially in colder ambient temperatures. **EXTERIOR HIGHLIGHTS** The Taycan CT boasts advanced features, including LED headlights with Porsche Dynamic Light System Plus (PDLS Plus), a front apron with carbon inlay, black side sills with carbon inlay, a louvered design rear diffuser with carbon inlay, high-gloss black wheel arch trim, exterior mirror housings painted in the exterior colour with a high-gloss black mirror base, and high-gloss black side window trims. All Taycan CT models are equipped with two highly efficient electric motors, one on the front axle and another on the rear axle, ensuring exceptional all-wheel drive performance. Merely reading about these remarkable features and my first-hand experience won’t do justice for the Taycan CT. To truly appreciate its capabilities and innovation, I encourage you to experience it yourself.
