***Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam*** Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam (BIBD) and its subsidiaries performed its obligation as a business by handing over its zakat on business for the financial year 2021, along with zakat for customer deposits, to the Brunei Islamic Religious Council (MUIB) at the Ministry of Religious Affairs (MoRA) building in Berakas yesterday. BIBD’s Business zakat amounted to BND2,809,070.90, while zakat for customer deposits for the period of April 22, 2021 to April 24, 2022 amounted to BND 529,744.82, derived from obligations paid by the bank and its customers. Minister of Religious Affairs Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin bin Pengarah Dato Paduka Haji Awang Othman, in his capacity as MUIB President, received the zakat from Assistant Mufti (Buhuth) at the State Mufti’s Office and Chairman of the Shariah Advisory Body of BIBD and its subsidiaries Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mazanan bin Haji Yusof. Deputy Minister of Religious Affairs Pengiran Dato Seri Paduka Haji Bahrom bin Pengiran Haji Bahar and BIBD Acting Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Hajah Noraini binti Haji Sulaiman were also in attendance, joined by senior officials from MoRA, BIBD and the BIBD Shariah Advisory Body. As one of the five pillars of Islam, zakat payment is a method of purifying and distributing wealth, supporting those in need as stipulated by Syariah. To facilitate and ease Muslim customers in fulfilling their obligations, BIBD has provided the convenience of paying their zakat for customer deposits at all branches nationwide. BIBD also partnered with the ministry to enable the public to pay their zakat fitrah digitally through BIBD QuickPay until 28 Ramadhan 1442, eliminating the need to physically go to a mosque. The bank’s General Manager Dr Li Feng and Deputy General Manager Zheng Gang presented the donations comprising daily necessities to 10 needy families to ease their financial burden during Ramadhan, conveying the corporate image of Bank of China taking social responsibility for the society. JAPEM officer Janapi bin Jian also attended. The general manager said charity and poverty alleviation are the traditional virtues of the Chinese nation. The bank actively fulfils its social responsibilities to the local community, and looks forward to more public welfare activities in the future. PHOTO: BANK OF CHINA *** ***Postal Services Department*** Lyna Mohamad Forty-one postmen of the Postal Services Department received basic necessities from the Brunei Darussalam Red Crescent Society (BDRCS) at its headquarters in Bunut Post Office on Friday. BDRCS President Pengiran Dato Paduka Haji Mohd Yussoff bin Pengiran Haji Bahar and Acting Post Master General Haji Aminuddin bin Haji Mohd Taib handed over the food packs. BDRCS Vice President Haji Mohd Suhaimi bin Haji Ibrahim said the contribution was part of an annual charity project to aid those in need. This year, the society distributed food packs to postmen as a gesture of appreciation for their services towards the community as frontliners. PHOTO: POSTAL SERVICES DEPARTMENT *** ***Chinese Embassy in Brunei Darussalam*** James Kon Chargé d’ Affaires of the Chinese Embassy in Brunei Darussalam Wang Haitao, representing the China Overseas Friendship Association (COFA), donated nearly 1,700 Chinese language textbooks to Chinese schools in the Sultanate in a ceremony on Thursday. The textbooks cover Chinese language learning, history and traditional culture, while facilitating Bruneian students in learning the language. The Board of Directors’ chairs and principals of Chung Hwa Middle School, Bandar Seri Begawan, Chung Ching Middle School, Seria and Chung Hwa School, Kiudang were also present. The donations served to spread festive cheer and prepare the families for the upcoming Hari Raya festivities. Progresif Corporate Social Responsibility representative Amilin Mat Sah said the company is fuelled by people with heart, and they are in the business of keeping families connected and striving to go above and beyond for the community. Meanwhile, YEAB Vice President Louis Loo said the association is happy to spread festive cheer to the less fortunate by providing them with basic supplies and festive goodies.
