The allure of camping and glamping has grown exponentially in Brunei, as families and groups discover the joys of connecting with nature. This trend was evident during the recent Family Friend Camping Glamping Group event in Muara Beach, where participants gathered to enjoy a weekend of outdoor activities and family bonding. Mohd Alimin bin Haji Kina, a participant in the family category, shared his experience and preparation for the camping event. “It took us about two to three days to prepare since most of the camping equipment was already available. However, we had to purchase some new items to replace damaged ones,” he explained. The event spanned three days, from August 9 to 11. Reflecting on the experience, Mohd Alimin expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to teach his children important life skills. “As parents, we are thankful to be able to teach our children how to be independent and live more meaningful lives in the future. But at the campsite, they realised the importance of appreciating nature and participating in family activities,” Mohd Alimin added. Md Roydee Shahlan bin Haji Sallahuddin, another passionate camper, emphasised the importance of preparation and how camping fosters a sense of responsibility. “Preparation usually takes about two to three days, ensuring all food supplies and battery-operated equipment are ready. Camping is a group activity that my family and I often follow up on, participating in future events when time allows,” he explained. Md Roydee also highlighted how camping helps cultivate valuable life lessons. “As campers, we always keep track of upcoming events, and if we have the time, we definitely join. For emergencies, I bring along a Portable Power Station,” he said. He camped for four days and three nights and expressed enthusiasm about future camping events. “If there are future camping events, I will definitely participate. I suggest that the Ministry of Youth and Sports consider creating a designated camping area, as camping is an activity that can relieve stress and offer many benefits, including fostering camaraderie among campers,” he remarked. The growing popularity of camping and glamping in Brunei is undeniable. What was once a trend of vacationing in hotels has now evolved into an appreciation for the tranquility of nature. Families are finding joy in activities such as camping by riversides or beaches, which serve as a therapeutic escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. I also make sure to charge all battery-powered lights and fans to last for the 4-day, 3-night camping duration.
