Teqball originated from a simple yet brilliant concept in 2014, thanks to former professional footballer Gábor Borsányi and his friends’ computer scientist Viktor Huszár and businessman György Gattyán. They envisioned a game that could enhance football skills in a fun and engaging manner, leading to the creation of this unique sport. Teqball seamlessly combines the quick footwork and finesse of football with the precision and strategy of table tennis. Played on a specially curved table, known as the teq table, teqball has emerged as a distinctive hybrid of these two seemingly unrelated sports. This innovative and unique sport blends elements of sepak takraw and table tennis, creating a perplexing yet captivating ruleset. Conceived by the three visionary enthusiasts from Hungary, teqball has rapidly spread across the globe. The influence of teqball is evident even in the Sultanate, where groups such as the Brunei Darussalam Teqball Association are at the forefront of promoting and developing the sport, fostering a small yet passionate sporting community. **TEQBALL’S SIMPLE TWIST** In actual play, especially through the lens of local players who are accustomed to playing sepak takraw, teqball’s rules are straightforward: players must hit the ball back and forth using any part of their body except their hands and arms, much like sepak takraw. However, unlike sepak takraw, where the ball is simply passed between players, teqball’s curved table adds an extra layer of challenge, requiring players to bounce the ball on the table, akin to table tennis. The ball’s bounce is not only reliably reflected towards the players but also in an unpredictable manner due to the table’s curved nature, demanding quick reflexes and sharp coordination. One such initiative was a recent teqball roadshow held in the Belait District. Members of the association, alongside trained coaches, players, and referees, introduced the basics of teqball to students from schools across the district. The teqball roadshow exemplifies the growing passion for the sport in Brunei, as local players and enthusiasts work tirelessly to integrate teqball into the nation’s sporting culture. **BRUNEI’S TEQBALL EMBRACE** Speaking with president of the Brunei Darussalam Teqball Association Mohammad Shukri bin Haji Damit, it is clear that the recent teqball roadshow in the Belait District aims to provide invaluable information and guidance to aspiring players and students. “This roadshow, held in collaboration with the Belait District’s Youth and Sports Department, invited around 50 participants, many of whom are students.” “Our goal is to instil knowledge in young athletes who will hone their skills in teqball and beyond,” he explained. In addition to practical training sessions, the workshop also delved into the history and unique development of teqball. Mohammad Shukri highlighted that since the first official competition in 2017, teqball has sparked global curiosity due to its modern and unique nature. The spread of teqball to Brunei began around 2019, leading to the formation of the Brunei Darussalam Teqball Association in December 2020. “Once established, we started conducting workshops and roadshows to promote teqball in Brunei, reaching out to interested players and curious individuals,” he said. Despite being a modern sport that feels both foreign and familiar, interest in teqball has been steadily rising. “Our first exhibition match in 2021 at The Mall, Gadong, garnered significant interest. However, the global COVID-19 pandemic posed challenges to our growth,” Mohammad Shukri noted. Nonetheless, the association has seized various opportunities to compensate for the setbacks, including initiatives like the Belait District roadshow. These efforts reflect a dedicated push to integrate teqball into Brunei’s sporting culture, fostering a growing community of passionate players. **OVERCOMING CHALLENGES AND INSPIRING YOUTH** “One of the challenges in playing teqball, due to its uniqueness, is the use of the special teqball table,” explained Mohammad Shukri. “We work closely with relevant agencies, such as the Youth and Sports Department, to ensure players can easily access the necessary facilities and equipment.” In addition to the special teqball Table, the sport requires a standard Size 5 ball, which is more readily available. As the association remains at the forefront of teqball’s growth in Brunei, Mohammad Shukri noted plans to organise an inter-school tournament. “This is why we focus our roadshows on students. We have identified several schools with potential and skills in teqball to be part of our pilot project for hosting an inter-school tournament. “We are also collaborating with the Co-Curriculum Education Department to establish an annual teqball competition,” he added. Mohammad Shukri also revealed that the association aims to host district tournaments and the Teq Cup, a short-format competition. The roadshow and the placement of teqball tables at district sports complexes are foundational steps towards realising this vision. With its blend of football, sepak takraw, and table tennis, teqball offers a unique sporting experience that bridges cultures and skill sets. As groups like the Brunei Darussalam Teqball Association continue to embrace this exciting sport, the future of teqball in Brunei and beyond looks promising.
