As the nation celebrates the 78th birthday of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, the atmosphere comes alive at night through perayaan (festive stalls) across the Sultanate.
In the Brunei-Muara District, the festive stalls are set up in the parking area opposite the Royal Regalia Museum and outside the vicinity of Taman Haji Sir Muda Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien in the capital.
During a media visit to the festive stalls in the capital on Sunday, people were seen flocking to the stalls, starting at 6pm, with their families and friends, not only to enjoy the festive atmosphere but to also sample an array of food and drinks, including the most-sought after sotong tutuk.
BynJournal, a first-time vendor at the perayaan, offers Western dishes, including their signature creamy corn ribs.
“We looked forward to taking part in this year’s event, as it always attracts a lot of people.
It’s a good platform for us to market and introduce our products to potential customers,” said Syua’aib.
Apart from food and drinks, the stalls also offer clothes, toys and other items.
Farah binti Ahmad, who visited the stalls, said that these stalls are not only venues to spend time with family but also an opportunity to explore new food from young vendors.
“Here we see efforts and talents of the youth to come up with new culinary creations,” she said.
Meanwhile, in the Tutong District, the Mukim Ukong and Mukim Kiudang consultative councils are showcasing colourful night performances, such as the singing of Hari Keputeraan and a showcase of a Dusun engagement and wedding ceremonies by the residents of Kampong Ukong.
Kampong Bukit, Kampong Long Mayan, Kampong Batang Mitus and Kampong Benutan are also displaying their traditions and cultures.
In the Belait District, the festivities kicked off on Monday evening, featuring hundreds of stalls at Tudung Saji.
In addition to food and fun games, a stage has also been set up for a myriad of performances carried out every night, starting at 8.30pm, by various groups and associations in the district. – Adib Noor, Lyna Mohamad & Daniel Lim
