Innovation is the driving force behind the evolution of education. Classrooms are no longer confined to four walls; they have expanded into the limitless realms of the digital world. Innovations such as flipped classrooms, blended learning and gamification have enriched teaching methods and made learning more engaging and interactive for students. This was said by Minister of Education Datin Seri Setia Dr Hajah Romaizah binti Haji Mohd Salleh during the opening ceremony of the Teachers’ Day Conference 2023 at Universiti Brunei Darussalam’s Chancellor Hall yesterday. PHOTO: ROKIAH MAHMUD “This means that teachers must continue to be innovative, in creating dynamic learning environments that foster curiosity, critical thinking, and creativity.” The minister said that it is crucial to remember that while technology and AI are powerful tools, they should complement, not replace the human touch in education. Teachers, she added, bring empathy, mentorship, and inspiration to the classroom – qualities that cannot be replicated by machines. “We must harness technology and AI as partners in our educational journey, allowing us to focus more on fostering human connections and nurturing the social and emotional development of our students. “The future of teaching is not about machines taking over; it’s about teachers and technology collaborating to create more effective and personalised learning experience,” she said. “Teachers and in fact, everyone in the education field, must equip themselves with the skills and knowledge necessary to harness the potential of technology and AI hence continuous professional development and a growth mind-set are essential. Let us be the leaders who guide our students through the digital age, teaching them not only how to use technology but also how to think critically, ethically, and empathetically in an interconnected world. “We are the architects of a future where innovation, technology, and AI converge with the enduring values of knowledge, empathy, and human connection.” “Together, we can inspire our students to become responsible global citizens who can navigate, shape, and thrive in the ever-evolving landscape of the 21st Century. This past few years have been a testament to the power of technology to help us adapt to a new normal\ in education. “The continuing theme ‘Building a Resilient Education Ecosystem’, remains relevant and pertinent today as we try to ensure our preparedness for any potential disruption. A resilient education system that is in place would ensure that our mission to educate would be inclusive of the needs of learners particularly the most vulnerable,” she said. The minister also stressed that the conference, not only celebrates the dedicated teachers who devoted their lives to the noble cause of education, but also reflects on the evolving landscape of teaching, learning, and the role of technology and AI in our educational journey. “It is essential that we acknowledge the world of education is rapidly changing. Over the years, the digital era has ushered in an unprecedented wave of innovation, transforming the way we teach and learn.
