International School Brunei (ISB) Executive Principal and Chief Executive Officer Dominic Morley encouraged students to excel and embrace change, quoting Walt Disney’s words, “To excel is to change, and to change for the better. Focus all your energy on perfecting the change.” He also emphasised the collaborative effort in raising children and highlighted the excellent education, quality care, and the collective dedication of various stakeholders at ISB. Morely made these comments when ISB celebrated the achievements of its May 2023 International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma students at an award ceremony on October 5. Fourteen students received the Board of Directors Achievement Awards for their performance. PHOTO: ISB The recipients were Nicole Ooi and Yen Tze Chia, who each scored 41 points, as well as Jena Rahman and Liam Curaming, who both achieved 40 points. Hazry Elzy Salwadi, Liow Jia Shiuan, Liana Leong, Chloe Yew, Pierre Tan, Liu Jia Wen, Aisyah Md Saini and Cheryl Teo all received the Bronze Award for achieving between 37 and 39 points. Soobeen Yuh and Rafa’ie Hanaifah also received Achievement Awards for performing at least five points higher than their individually set IB baseline. Invited guest speaker Liyana Hanif, ISB alumna and IB graduate of the Class of 2011 who is now the Head of Creative at Progresif Sdn Bhd, spoke of her experience with the IB Diploma Programme and how it helped prepare her for future success. “My time at ISB laid the foundation for the person I am today and the career I have built. From surviving IB to winning design awards and empowering my local creative community, it’s been quite the adventure,” she said. The ceremony concluded with closing remarks from ISB graduates 2021-2023 Ministry of Education Scholar Hazry Elzy Salwadi and Board of Directors Bronze Award recipient Pierre Tan, who both expressed gratitude to the ISB Board of Directors, teachers and their parents. The event also marked the final farewell for the Year 13 students as they embark on their university endeavours all over the world. The Board of Directors Achievement Awards began in 2018, making 2023 the sixth time that ISB’s top IB achievers have received awards, together with financial bursaries to contribute to their cost of tertiary education. The IB Diploma is a gold-standard, academically challenging course completed by students all over the world. Globally, 179,917 students were assessed for the IB Diploma in May 2023, with an average point score of 30.24. At ISB, the average point score was 33, well above the global average.
