His Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Mateen and Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Anak Isteri Anisha Rosnah binti Adam attended the launch of the Faith and Devotion art exhibition at Balai Khazanah Islam Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah (BKISHHB) yesterday. At the ceremony, His Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Mateen officiated the opening of the exhibition as well as attended the launch of the logo of BKISHHB. The art exhibition is the first of its kind in the country, featuring 20 Orientalist paintings by renowned 19th Century artists. It includes works by Jean-Leon-Gerome, Osman Hamdi Bey and Rudolf Ernst. The theme, ‘Faith and Devotion’, explores depictions of the many parts of the Muslim world termed as ‘the Orient’ in the 19th Century and shed an important light on Islamic culture and religion at a time when artists from Europe, America and Ottoman empire (later Turkiye) were inspired by the culture and religious practices of the region bordering the Mediterranean and further east. PHOTO: MUIZ MATDANI British art company Sotheby’s Senior Director Claude Piening said, “This is the first ever exhibition in the country of figurative art celebrating the Islamic world.” Piening, who is also Sotheby’s head of 19th Century European Paintings, added, “We hope both the local community and visitors to your country will find enlightening.” He also said the spirit of cultural exchange lies at the heart of the exhibition as 19th and early 20th Century artists from Europe, America and Turkiye aimed at broadening their audiences’ understanding of the Muslim culture. The exhibition partners include Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam (BIBD) as the Diamond Partner, Sotheby’s as the Curation Partner and other partners including UNN, DST, BKISHHB, Royal Brunei Airlines and PrintPlus. Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) and Minister of Defence II, Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Awang Halbi bin Haji Mohd Yussof; Minister at the PMO and Minister of Finance and Economy II Dato Seri Setia Dr Awang Haji Mohd Amin Liew bin Abdullah; Minister of Home Affairs Dato Seri Setia Haji Ahmaddin bin Haji Abdul Rahman; Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Nazmi bin Haji Mohamad; and Deputy Minister of Finance and Economy (Fiscal) Pengiran Datin Seri Paduka Hajah Zety Sufina binti Pengiran Dato Paduka Haji Sani, as well as other senior officials were also present at the launch ceremony. The Faith and Devotion art exhibition will be open to the public from July 20 until January 30, 2025. Meanwhile, BKISHHB also unveiled their new building logo, which contains the royal emblem of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam. The monarch’s name, written both in Roman and* Jawi Thuluth Jali* script, symbolises the Sultanate’s commitment in the use of *Jawi script*. – Rokiah Mahmud
