His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, graced a special reception in honour of the monarch’s 77th birthday celebration yesterday. Accompanying His Majesty was Her Majesty Duli Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Hajah Saleha binti Al-Marhum Pengiran Pemancha Pengiran Anak Haji Mohamed Alam. The reception, held at the Royal Berkshire Hall of the Royal Brunei Polo and Riding Club, was hosted by diplomatic missions of foreign countries in Brunei Darussalam. His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office, and Her Royal Highness Paduka Seri Pengiran Anak Isteri Pengiran Anak Sarah binti Pengiran Haji Salleh Ab Rahaman also graced the reception. Her Royal Highness Princess Hajah Masna, Ambassador-at-Large at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Lela Cheteria Sahibun Najabah Pengiran Anak Haji Abdul Aziz bin Pengiran Jaya Negara Pengiran Haji Abu Bakar were also in attendance. PHOTO: RAFI ROSLI ![](https://media.everythingbrunei.com/public/mJQj_RoOZ0AO6Q3MIdjxj-2PQs1wFsiaBMpmfBrJO2q.jpeg) PHOTO: RAFI ROSLI British High Commissioner to Brunei Darussalam John Virgoe in his welcoming remarks on behalf of the Dean and Diplomatic Corps, said the diplomatic community was delighted to continue the tradition of hosting the reception, which is also a celebration of the strong diplomatic ties with Brunei Darussalam. “The Diplomatic Corps would also like to congratulate Your Majesty on Brunei’s many diplomatic achievements over the last year, including the successful participation in the ASEAN Summits in Phnom Penh and Labuan Bajo, and Brunei’s ratification of the CPTPP. “We appreciate Brunei’s steadfast support for the international rule of law; for the principles of the United Nations (UN) Charter and the ASEAN Charter; and Brunei’s contributions to tackling climate change and protecting its unique biodiversity,” he said. He on behalf of the diplomats expressed appreciation for the hospitality the diplomatic community continues to receive from His Majesty’s Government and from the people of Brunei, adding that it is a privilege and an honour for each one of them to serve in the country and work to deepen the ties of friendship between Brunei and their countries. John Virgoe ended his speech by wishing His Majesty and members of the royal family good health, long life and happiness, and prayed for blessings upon His Majesty’s government and the people. Jassim Ali Abdullah Al Obaidli presented His Majesty with a pesambah of a silver-plated sword from Qatar, in honour of the monarch on behalf of the Diplomatic Corps. The sword engraved by hand took 120 hours of work by skilled expert master craftsmen. The craft is part of Qatari culture and heritage, using the finest pure silver and bronze. The sword is decorated to the highest of standards. His Majesty then led the royal entourage in meeting and speaking with heads of diplomatic mission and their spouses. – Lyna Mohamad
