***Unstoppable Awangku Muhammad Syakir sweeps domestic golfing championships.*** Winning a tournament and besting a field of dozens or hundreds of entrants are both a personal and professional ambition for all athletes regardless if it is domestic or overseas honours. PHOTO: PENGIRAN AZAM The recently-concluded 25th Baiduri Masters catapulted local golfing star Awangku Muhammad Syakir bin Pengiran Haji Alli to unprecedented success after completing his collection of major domestic honours. Possibly carrying similar significance as the world’s leading golfers aiming for glory in any of the Majors, every golfer in the country aspires to win the Pusat Ehsan Charity Golf Tournament, the Pantai Mentiri Amateur Golf Championship and the Baiduri Masters in their career. But the unstoppable Awangku Muhammad Syakir, who is undoubtedly the most in-form and consistent golfer nationwide, is on course for a clean sweep in a single calendar year. Still in his early 20s, the national golfer has ushered a period of dominance perhaps in the same pattern as Johari bin Haji Ahmad in 2018 in which his own unrelenting form culminated in capturing the highly-coveted Baiduri Masters. His reputation in the golfing circle was enhanced following his inclusion as a representative of the country as a national athlete in the 18th Asian Games in Jakarta, Indonesia alongside his teammate Mohd Aritz Maldini bin Haji Abdul Majid. Previously, he was also selected for the national team to take part in the 29th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in 2017. Gaining experience in a top-level competition against quality competitors who rarely make mistakes and perform to the highest standards has perhaps helped him in his development and growth. The golfing ace perhaps produced his finest round in an overseas tournament after recording the lowest score of the day with a score of 64 (eight under) during the 3M Open Qualifier in Pattaya, Thailand in July 2022. With a score that would have catapulted him to the top of the leaderboard, Awangku Muhammad Syakir sunk nine birdies and eight bogeys with only one bogey in an otherwise solid round to end his experience playing internationally on a high. Being able to showcase his ability and brilliance in unfamiliar territory is inspired by his pathway to success which first began following a dramatic win over his teammate Mohd Aritz Maldini during the Pusat Ehsan Charity Golf Tournament in 2020. In what turned out to be one of the historic moments in the national golfing scene, the tournament entered a playoff stage, sparking a competitive rivalry between the pair. It also ushered the arrival of the younger generation in the sport which has normally been dominated by seasoned and experienced golfers. In a tense playoff, Awangku Muhammad Syakir came out on top and clinched his first Pusat Ehsan title amid the resumption of competitions following the COVID-19 pandemic. This victory propelled him to a rise in form as he continued with a run of four titles in five appearances at the heavily-favoured Pantai Mentiri Golf Course in Kampong Mentiri. Now a force among his peers, he joined a selected few golfers in the country to win a double after landing the Pantai Mentiri Amateur Open Golf Championship in June 2021 by eight strokes. The top two golfers in the tournament including Mohd Aritz Maldini underlined the dominance and power of youth in the sport with young player Qawi Fakhri bin Haji Aslimon also making it in the top five. Barely a month later, Awangku Muhammad Syakir took on all comers to win the inaugural Brunei Darussalam Golf Association (BDGA) Championship in a collective display of consistency, dominance, and brilliance. It was an equally dominant year in 2022 for Awangku Muhammad Syakir as he won numerous tournaments on the domestic stage. The national golfer showed no signs of slowing down after bagging the prestigious BDGA Brunei Open in June 2022 before adding the International Amateur Open Golf Championship 2022 to his name in September. With the support of the BDGA, he gained an opportunity to play in Jakarta two weeks before the International Amateur Open Golf Championship, hailing it as a “good experience”. His experience helped his mental approach towards the game by staying calm and composed under pressurised situations. Unlike previous tournaments, it proved a tight finish having edged serial winner Seruji bin Haji Setia by a single stroke with a score of 70. Such confidence brought him more success as he won the Pusat Ehsan Charity Golf Tournament for a second time in October 2022, again seeing off competition from\ Mohd Aritz Maldini. In November 2022, Awangku Muhammad Syakir came second in the pro category of the NBT Trophy 2022 behind Bryan Chiew Chun Hao at The Empire Golf and Country Club. In May this year, the roles were reversed as Awangku Muhammad Syakir retained his Pantai Mentiri Amateur Open Golf Championship by three strokes ahead. However, Awangku Muhammad Syakir’s finest moment in his burgeoning career came early this month when he was crowned the winner of the highly-prestigious 25th Baiduri Masters.
