In a celebration of academic excellence, the Ministry of Education recently honoured outstanding students who shone in the 2023 national exams. The Outstanding Achievers Award Ceremony 2023, which recognised 212 students across multiple categories, aimed to motivate them to continue striving for excellence. These remarkable individuals not only excelled in their studies but also exemplified perseverance, dedication, and a drive for success. Their journey serves as a beacon of hope and motivation for students everywhere, showing that with passion and perseverance, any dream is within reach. As we applaud their achievements, let us also acknowledge the support and guidance of their teachers, families, and communities in helping them reach such remarkable heights. Eighteen-year-old Zia Rizqiyyah Chik from Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Science College stood out on the global stage, placing ninth in the world for Design and Technology at the GCE ‘A’ Level examination. This was her second international accolade, her first being during the ‘AS’ Level exam. Reflecting on her achievements, Zia said, “I feel so grateful and honoured. Big goals can be overwhelming,” she said. Zia also credited her rigorous practice routine and additional classes, even on weekends and school holidays, as key to her understanding and performance. “Always do your practice, including answering past years’ examination papers to familiarise yourself with question techniques and trends,” she said. The student went on to highlight the importance of balancing academic pressures with personal care. “We need to be strong-minded and focused, but also take decent breaks, sleep well, and enjoy time with family or play some sports to avoid stress,” she said. Looking forward, Zia is eager to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in Architectural Design at Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB), hoping to find a niche in the architectural field or teach design and technology. Despite her successes, Zia’s journey wasn’t without challenge as she recalled the coursework, portfolios and juggling personal matters at home. For the 18-year-old, it meant long days and sleepless nights, however she had always tried to maintain a positive outlook. Meanwhile, Poh Ee Fong from Chung Hwa Middle School emerged as a remarkable achiever in the GCE ‘O’ Level 2023 exam. Securing top positions globally, Poh attained joint first in Mathematics Syllabus D, joint first in Additional Mathematics, and ninth place in Accounting, also earning the title of Best Across Nine (second place in Brunei). Expressing her gratitude, Poh said, “I am so grateful and happy to receive these awards. All my hard work has paid off.” She also thanked her school, family, teachers, and friends for their support. Driven by clear goals and dreams, Poh remains motivated. “I am goal-oriented and have dreams I want to achieve. No matter how tough it gets, I know it will be worth it in the future,” she said. Sharing her study tips, Poh emphasised the importance of practice, encouraging students to regularly attempt past year papers. She also advised seeking clarification from teachers on challenging topics. “Hard work beats talent when talent does not work hard,” she said. Currently pursuing ‘A’ Levels, Poh aspires to become a doctor, showcasing her determination to excel. Meanwhile for Khairul Airil Darwish Zainal, a 12-year-old student who achieved straight A’s in the Primary School Assessment (PSR) Examinations, earning him a Top Achievers award, he credited his success to the guidance and support of his family, particularly his parents and siblings, who have been his pillars of strength. Formerly a student at Muhammad Alam Primary School, Khairul now attends Anthony Abe;l College in Seria. As the youngest of 10 siblings, Khairul looks up to his family for guidance and support. He also expressed aspirations of becoming a successful businessman, aiming to support his family while achieving personal success. Looking ahead, he is focused on maintaining his academic excellence as he prepares for the Student Progress Examination (SPE) next year. For his excellent results, Khairul’s parents treated him to a trip to Kuala Lumpur, marking his first journey to the Malaysian capital – a reward that brought a smile to his face. – Rokiah Mahmud
