Hajah Wafiqah binti Haji Daim was awarded the Universiti Teknologi Brunei’s (UTB) Scholars Scheme yesterday to pursue a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Nutrition and Food Sciences at the University of Queensland, Australia, for four years. In an interview with the only recipient of the UTB’s Scholars Scheme, Hajah Wafiqah said, “Alhamdulillah, this achievement is part of my dream journey and career to pursue a PhD and become a lecturer. I am thankful to UTB for giving me this opportunity.” Upon completing her PhD in Australia, she will return to UTB as a lecturer at the School of Applied Sciences and Mathematics. She said, “The achievement would not be possible without the support and prayers from my parents and family.” The 27-year-old added, “I want to make an impact on the community, help to achieve Brunei Vision 2035 and the sustainable development goals and help UTB to achieve its missions.” On choosing food science, she said, “It has always been my interest because of the global concerns on food safety and quality. I feel that we need to tackle the challenge that food industry is facing today.” Hajah Wafiqah shared her advice on excelling academically by saying, “Focus on your studies and dream big. To become successful, you need to focus on your dreams and goals as well as staying committed to what you love doing.” The UTB Scholars Scheme signing ceremony was held yesterday, highlighting the university’s commitment to academic excellence but also aligns with the broader national vision of the Sultanate. UTB Vice-Chancellor Datin Paduka Professor Dr Hajah Zohrah binti Haji Sulaiman was the guest of honour. UTB principal officers, staff and guests were also in attendance. UTB registrar and secretary Lim Chui Hua, in his welcoming speech, said, “What makes this achievement special is that Hajah Wafiqah is the third scholar from the university to be consented by His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam. “The honour highlights the confidence placed in her abilities and potential to contribute to the nation’s academic and intellectual development.” An official agreement was signed by Hajah Wafiqah and UTB Acting Assistant Vice-Chancellor (Academic Affairs) Dr Sharul Tazrajiman bin Haji Tajuddin. The scheme is a prestigious programme designed to identify and support exceptional local talent for advanced academic studies and research by offering scholarships for higher education, including tuition, living expenses, and additional support. Recipients, selected based on merit, are expected to complete their studies abroad and return to contribute as academic leaders at UTB, aligning with the Brunei Vision 2035 goal of having a highly educated and skilled population. The scheme seeks to empower and support students who are not only academically accomplished but also driven by a passion for driving positive change and making a significant impact on society.
