Minister of Transport and Infocommunications Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Shamhary bin Pengiran Dato Paduka Haji Mustapha highlighted the government’s unwavering commitment to promoting local participation and development within the maritime sector during his keynote speech at the escort tugs commencement ceremony. The minister emphasised the government’s focus on nurturing Bruneian-owned businesses in maritime services through supportive policies. He expressed the aim to ensure that local companies have access to opportunities traditionally dominated by international entities and play a significant role in port and shipping services. The Sultanate is actively engaged in international maritime affairs, advocating for the interests of its local industry and contributing to a thriving and competitive maritime sector. The growth and development of the port and shipping industries are crucial for fostering local business success, said the minister. Currently, 78 vessels are registered under the Brunei flag, ranging from gas carriers to offshore support vessels. The addition of SPHI Marine’s escort tugs will further increase this number, representing a significant stride towards expanding the presence of Brunei-flagged vessels, said Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Shamhary. The minister said greater local participation in the maritime sector and increase in vessels registered under the Brunei flag will not only enhance the national fleet but also create opportunities for local businesses, fostering a more competitive and sustainable maritime industry. Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Shamhary paid tribute to Brunei LNG Sdn Bhd’s local business development drive and mission to offer local employment opportunities. The delivery and commencement of SPHI Marine’s three locally-owned and flagged escort tugs are a testament to Brunei LNG’s efforts and mark another significant step forward in local business development. The achievement provides valuable job opportunities for Bruneians, both onshore and offshore, and helps equip the workforce with the skills and expertise to contribute to the industry and the nation, the minister said. Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Shamhary described the milestone as a testament to the importance of collaboration, resilience and determination shown by all parties involved. He expressed confidence that Bruneian companies are capable of meeting international industry standards and emphasised the government’s unwavering commitment to creating an environment in which local businesses can prosper. Looking ahead, the minister envisioned a Sultanate where local companies play a pivotal role in shaping the maritime industry, supported by robust governance and a dedication to excellence.
