Singapore Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office, Second Minister for Education and Second Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Mohamad Maliki bin Osman and spouse Sadiah Shahal experienced the unique tradition of celebrating Hari Raya Aidilfitri in Kampong Ayer yesterday. Minister of Home Affairs Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Ahmaddin bin Haji Abdul Rahman welcomed the visiting minister and delegation. They then set off on water taxis to Jolaini bin Haji Alim’s residence in Kampong Sungai Pandan ‘B’. Dr Mohamad Maliki said it was interesting seeing a kampong on water which is unique to the Sultanate. He said Bruneians should be proud of the rich cultural history of Kampong Ayer. The visit in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidilfitri reflected the closeness between the two countries. The delegation also strolled on a walkway refurbished in a collaboration between the Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA) and Singapore Association in Brunei to commemorate 40 years of bilateral relations between the Sultanate and Singapore. The Singaporean minister signed a plaque to mark the joint project. The SG Cares project raised BND40,000 to fund various community projects to make a difference and have a lasting impact on those in need. Ten houses were identified by Tutong, Belait and Temburong district offices for restoration and these projects are expected to be completed by the end of May. The Brunei-Muara District Office, under its own initiative, upgraded two stretches of wooden bridges, completed on February 20, as well as repaired and repainted Pier 17 of Kampong Sungai Pandan, completed on April 9. The Singaporean delegation included Minister of State at the Prime Minister’s Office Desmond Tan Kok Ming and spouse Tara Heng, and Member of Parliament Yeo Wan Ling.
