Discussion on artificial intelligence (AI) and cybersecurity took centre stage yesterday on the first day of the Digital Future Conference (DFC) 2024 at the Bridex Banquet Hall. Minister of Transport and Infocommunications Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Shamhary bin Pengiran Dato Paduka Haji Mustapha officiated the opening of the conference. The minister also delivered a keynote address on ongoing efforts by the government to support digital innovation through several initiatives aimed at creating a conducive environment for technological growth and development. Themed ‘Digital Innovation for Sustainable Development’, the two-day conference brings together local and foreign professionals, innovators and thought leaders. PHOTO: MUIZ MATDANI Authority for Info-communications Technology Industry of Brunei Darussalam (AITI) Chief Executive Ir Haji Jailani bin Haji Buntar, in his opening remarks, said, “DFC 2024 explores real-world examples of AI and cybersecurity, providing us with valuable insights and inspiring us to think creatively about how we can leverage digital innovation to advance sustainability, enhance security, and foster inclusive progress.” This year’s DFC 2024 also showcases a mini exhibition featuring AITI, ITPSS Sdn Bhd, Brunei Innovation Lab (BIL), Unified National Networks Sdn Bhd (UNN), Datastream Digital Sdn Bhd (DST), Progresif Sdn Bhd, BIPO Service (BN) Sdn Bhd, Flexxon Pte Ltd, and Standard Chartered Bank (SCB). The morning session started with a panel discussion on ‘Digital Innovation and Sustainability’, featuring panel members UNN Acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Chris Phan, Progresif CEO Hajah Nurul Haniah binti Haji Jaafar, Baiduri Bank Chief Information Officer Simon Hansman, and Head of Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Unit of the Wawasan Brunei Office at the Prime Minister’s Office Yusri bin Yahya. The session, moderated by Bandtree Sdn Bhd Project Manager and Green Brunei Co-Founder Fatin Arifin, explored how digital technologies can address sustainability challenges and contribute to environmental, social, and economic goals in Brunei Darussalam. The morning session also saw presentations on AI’s role in sustainable development, focusing on its applications in healthcare, precision agriculture and sustainable food production as well as the use of AI in transforming business and the digital marketplace. There was also a panel discussion on how society can learn and teach AI, fostering a culture of innovation in workplaces underscored by Ministry of Education Strategic Management Officer Syafiq Bakar, Brunei Shell Petroleum Company Sdn Bhd Digitalisation Manager Muhammad Norshafiee DP Haji Abdul Jalil, and BIL Technology Development Lead Chai Roslin and moderated by Progresif Chief Commercial and Innovation Officer Adi Iskandar Basri. The afternoon session saw a special presentation by Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation Head of Digital Investment Office Raymond Siva on ‘Malaysia’s Digital Investment Journey’, underscoring Malaysia’s digital transformation since 1996. A virtual presentation on RideTandem covered a conversation with its co-founder and COO, Brunei-born Chiam Tat Seng, who spoke about innovation and entering new markets with technology. RideTandem was recently named Transport Tech Company of the Year at the United Kingdom Business Tech Awards and included in the United Kingdom’s Top 100 Startups. Head of Product, AIoT, from eFishery Ksatriya Anantayutya presented ‘The Journey of eFishery – Harnessing AI for Sustainable Growth’, highlighting how eFishery, an Indonesian start-up, used AI for sustainable growth in the aquaculture industry, achieving unicorn status – valued at over USD1 billion. Other presentations included ‘A Peek Inside the Brain of ChatGPT for a Safer Use of AI’ by Adi Iskandar Basri, who provided insights into the safe use of AI, specifically focusing on the workings of ChatGPT. Over 350 participants attended the conference organised by AITI, facilitated by Confer Sdn Bhd, and in partnership with Cyber Security Brunei, ITPSS and Pocket. DFC 2024 is held in conjunction with the Brunei Mid-Year Conference and Exhibition (MYCE) 2024, an initiative by the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism. – James Kon
