Seeds for the Future 2023 (SFTF23), a collaboration between Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA) and Huawei Technologies (B) Sdn Bhd, was officially inaugurated yesterday at the UNISSA auditorium to provide meaningful development for the younger generation and provide them with a deep understanding of the latest technologies, including 5G technology, cloud computing, artificial intelligence (AI), robotics and machine learning (ML). Minister of Education Datin Seri Setia Dr Hajah Romaizah binti Haji Mohd Salleh was among the guests. Chief Executive Officer of Huawei Brunei Tong Wei Shiang thanked Faculty of Islamic Technology (FIT), UNISSA, and the former dean, Dr Hajah Tiawa binti Haji Hamid, for their effort in organising the eight-day SFTF2023 programme. He also expressed optimism in Brunei’s potential in modernising its technology infrastructure and digital space. Tong said the Seeds for the Future programme offers students an opportunity to explore technological innovations, participate in the global Tech4Good competition and engage in cultural exchanges with students from both domestic and international backgrounds. He also touched on the initiative and said it will expose staff and students skills and knowledge from an industrial perspective in a rapidly changing technological landscape. The programme includes 15 hours of live broadcast courses and access to over 40 online courses. The programme also brought in experts to mentor the students both face-to-face and virtually. Thirty-five students from various higher education institutions in the Sultanate are participating in the programme. Also in attendance were Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Teknologi Brunei Datin Paduka Professor Dr Hajah Zohrah binti Haji Sulaiman; Acting Rector of UNISSA Dr Hajah Lilly Suzanna binti Haji Shamsu; and Permanent Secretary (Higher Education) at the Ministry of Education Dr Haji Azman bin Ahmad; as well as assistant rectors and senior officers from UNISSA and representatives from higher education institutions, agencies, and students. – Azlan Othman
