Tamu Kianggeh is one of oldest traditional markets in the heart of the capital. It was recently relocated to a site merely a stone’s throw away to offer better facilities for both the vendors and the visitors. The market draws crowds every day of the week with Sundays being the busiest with visitors dropping by to buy fresh vegetables and fruits as well as dry foods and traditional handicrafts including keris (dagger) and parang (machete). The *Sunday Bulletin* visited the tamu yesterday and interviewed a number of vendors, mostly women and senior citizens. Hajah Aisah, 74, from Kampong Rimba used to work at Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha Hospital. She became bored after retirement in 2004 and decided to set up a stall at the market. She said business is typically slower during Ramadhan, except on Fridays and Sundays. Another issue she encounters is transportation. She does not want to be a burden to her working children so she hires help to bring her to the market and back, which costs her BND10 for a roundtrip. Rosiah binti Haji Sisa, another government retiree, said she started running a stall when she retired in 2017. The 67-year-old from Kampong Limau Manis said business has been slow due to the fasting month, though weekends draw some crowds, who tend to visit the market for fresh produce, not her wares. She said her children drop her off at the market every day and she would head home a few hours before iftar, unless it’s a quieter day, which she would head home earlier. Shahrom bin Rosli has been running his stall at the tamu for over five years. He said business fluctuates but is enough to support his family. He said there is a relatively slow but steady flow of customers during Ramadhan. The Tutong native who currently lives in Kampong Ayer with his wife said the vendors have no issues with the new market site. The only challenge is the tight competition with stalls selling the same items. Shahrom said he gets new supplies twice a week and prices vary with the suppliers. He said he sometimes need to mark up the price to keep the profit margin. “I believe in rezeki, be it good or bad. I am happy to make money with my own efforts.
