When it comes to strength and aesthetics, bodybuilding and physique competitions stand as the pinnacle of human form and fitness as these events not only showcase the remarkable discipline and dedication required to sculpt an exceptional physique, but it also celebrates the artistry involved in presenting the human body as a canvas of muscle and symmetry. Athletes spend years honing their physiques to achieve peak condition, adhering to rigorous training regimes and meticulous nutrition plans. The competitions themselves, with their blend of glamour and intensity, offer a stage where strength meets beauty, and where every flex of the muscle is evidence of the competitors’ hard work and commitment. In Brunei Darussalam, bodybuilding and physique competitions – once a niche pursuit – are now steadily gaining traction among local enthusiasts. This growing enthusiasm is reflected in the increasing participation of Bruneian athletes on both regional and international stages. The rising interest has been reinforced by notable achievements, with several local strength athletes not only securing podium finishes but also clinching top honours. Although Brunei has recently excelled in obstacle course racing, bodybuilding has remained a largely unexplored discipline. Reflecting on his victory, he expressed, “Alhamdulillah, by Allah the Almighty’s grace and will, this experience has been incredibly humbling and blessed. I felt immense pride in representing Brunei through this win.” Awangku Kamarolzaman acknowledged the intensity of the competition, noting, “The contest was exceptionally fierce; even the judges had a tough time selecting the top three and overall Champion of Champions.” His remarkable achievement underscores his unwavering passion and dedication, which have been evident since he embarked on his bodybuilding journey eight years ago. He credited his success to his strong support network, saying, “I am fortunate to have a solid support system. I must especially thank my wife, who has been my backbone, supporting me throughout my fitness journey and preparing my meals.” Equally influential has been his coach, Sofian bin Sahdan, who has played a crucial role in his development. “Sofian has been instrumental in pushing me through my training, devising my workout routines and diet plans, and monitoring my daily progress,” Awangku Kamarolzaman added. **BODYBUILDER BACKING** Also deserving recognition is Pengiran Suherman bin Pengiran Haji Bidin, who managed the finances for both the trip and the competition. Having made it to the top and emulating the footsteps of medal-winning Bruneians only points towards a promising future for more success stories. At 35, Pengiran Suherman observed, “In recent years, bodybuilding has gained popularity, with more young people focusing on weight and strength training to promote a healthier lifestyle.” His success is particularly notable as it marks his debut on the international stage. Although bodybuilding has yet to receive widespread national recognition, its benefits are becoming increasingly apparent. He added, “This is a great starting point for self-care, encompassing mental health, nutritional values and overall wellbeing.” While Bruneians have achieved success in local and regional competitions, including within Southeast Asia, nurturing talent requires strict adherence to a disciplined routine. Pengiran Suherman described the demanding regimen of a competitive strength athlete: intensive training combining cardio and weights five times a week at one of the local gyms, a high-protein diet, and a low intake of fats and sugars. Meals typically consist of eggs, chicken and vegetables, prepared without oil or sugar, to maintain peak physical condition. **FLEXING FOR GLORY** Highlighting the recent developments in Brunei’s bodybuilding scene, local gyms have started organising competitions that attract a range of participants. These events cater to all levels of enthusiasts, with categories for both beginners and intermediates. At a recent competition, two athletes have made notable achievements. Muhammad Khairuddin bin Haji Majanun secured second place in the Men’s Denim Model category, while his fellow gym member Mohammad Isamramadani finished in the top ten in the Men’s Bermuda Model category. The WFF Pro Qualifier Grand Prix Borneo Championship 2024, held at the Putera Ballroom in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, saw participation from over 100 competitors representing Brunei Darussalam, Sabah, Sarawak, Kuala Lumpur, Johor, Labuan and the Philippines. As gyms continue to foster new talent and local enthusiasts embrace the discipline, Brunei’s bodybuilding community is poised for even greater achievements. The dedication, hard work, and support that drive these athletes forward not only elevate the sport but also inspire the next generation of competitors.
