Azlan Othman Ramadhan is a special time that tests our patience to perform fasting for a whole month. The rewards for performing pious acts during this month exceed those in other months. According to a *Hadith* of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), one obligation performed in Ramadhan is similar to performing 70 obligations in other months. As Muslims in the Sultanate enter the last 10 days of Ramadhan, religious activities are intensified and devout *Ummah* enhanced their spiritual belief by staying awake at nights in search of the much-awaited *Lailatul Qadar.* Known as the Night of Power, *Lailatul Qadar* is a special night in the holy month bestowed by Allah the Almighty to Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and his *Ummah* as a sign of love and blessings. Every pious act performed during the night is far better than pious acts carried out in 1,000 months, as Allah the Almighty said in *Surah Al-Qadr* verses 1-3 that *“Lailatul Qadar* is better than 1,000 months, equivalent to 83 years”. ![](https://media.everythingbrunei.com/public/hw7weYWgc5hXmM81kKddk-Lwn5iIJl1jt49H8fCkofG.jpeg) Boys recite Al-Quran during the month of Ramadhan. PHOTO: KHAYR ZAKARIYYA To reap the rewards of *Lailatul Qadar*, Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) recommended seeking for it on odd-numbered dates in the last 10 nights of Ramadhan. The exact dates of *Lailatul Qadar* is never revealed by Allah the Almighty, however, Muslims can look for signs or characteristics of the special night, including: clear and peaceful night; and sunrise the next morning is less bright and less hot with the general weather being cool, breezy and peaceful. Families and their children are urged to do extra pious acts, perform highly recommended *Sunnat Tarawih* and *Sunnat Witir* prayers every night, intensify donations to the needy and recite* Al-Quran* or* Tedarus Al-Quran* for multiple rewards and to gain blessings from Allah the Almighty. Among the highly recommended practices are: *I’ktikaf* or seclusion at the mosque; *Qiamullail* or the night prayer like *Sunnat Tahajjud, Sunnat Taubat, Sunnat Hajat* and *Sunnat Tasbih* prayers; reciting Al-Quran, *Zikir* and performing *sedekah* or acts of charity. Besides, it is also encouraged to wake up family members to enliven the night with religious acts. The mystery behind the night contains a hidden wisdom in encouraging the *Ummah* to strive earnestly in heightening their acts of worship during the holy month of Ramadhan, instead of focussing solely on certain nights. The last 10 days and nights hold more significance as Allah the Almighty shows great mercy to His creation with opportunities to benefit from the immense blessings of Ramadhan and seek salvation before the month comes to an end. The angels descend by the permission of Allah the Almighty till the break of the morning. *Lailatul Qadar* allows the *Ummah* to multiply their rewards, as the last 10 nights of Ramadhan are the holiest of the entire month. It may prove to be a challenge for everyone given that the Muslim community is usually pre-occupied with preparations for* Hari Raya* which will either fall on April 21 or 22. However, as Muslims we must take this opportunity by increasing the deeds of worship in the last 10 days, for you will be rewarded. Have we multiplied our pious acts in 20 days of Ramadhan and further more in the last 10 days of the holy month? It is of great loss to those who do not reap benefits of* Lailatul Qadar.* Let us pray that with Ramadhan’s blessings, Allah the Almighty will accept our worship and repentance, forgive us and allow the country to attain blessings and protection from various disasters.
