The ferry operators revise the ferry schedule every two weeks. From Labuan, you need to purchase the tickets online. Upon arriving Brunei, it is advise you purchase your return ticket at the terminal once you arrive.
As for able to visit Brunei for a day trip, it all depends on the schedule of the ferry during your time of travel.
Hope this helps

If you depart from Labuan to Brunei it's much more easier. Just get the return ticket at Labuan ferry terminal. Time schedule available there, just check it there and decide you want day trip or overnight trip. FYI, from Brunei Ferry Terminal to the City centre will take you about half an hour by car and an hour by bus (which you need to walk estimate 2km / 25 minutes to the bus stop). Last 12Nov earliest ferry from Labuan to Brunei was 9.30am, from Brunei back to Labuan was 4.30pm.
