Met Department responds to viral message on typhoon

The Brunei Darussalam Meteorological Department (BDMD) yesterday addressing a viral image on social media dated July 12, which showed a typhoon over the South China Sea to hit today, said in a statement that no typhoon is observed at South China Sea currently.

The latest information showed a low pressure area over the Philippines as of 8am yesterday and was forecast to move towards the South China Sea and north-westwards, away from the Sultanate.

Brunei’s weather situation in the next few days is expected to be partly cloudy and occasionally windy with isolated showers or thundershowers potentially occurring in the afternoon and at night.

Over Brunei waters, the sea state is generally at slight to moderate, between 0.8-1.5 metres until July 15.

BDMD advised the public to follow the official weather information issued by the agency through its mobile application and social media platforms, while stressing the importance of not being easily misled by unverified information circulated on social media.

The agency also said the public can access the latest weather information by contacting the duty meteorological forecaster at the Forecast Centre, using the Weather Line 114, or visit their website.

I know the claim was bollock the moment I opened my Windy app. Wind speed was only 10 m/s in the red zone, hardly a strong breeze let alone a typhoon force wind.

It's amazing how people will believe this instantly.
