Brunei Darussalam and China are close neighbours across the sea, with a long history of cultural exchanges and friendship, said Chinese Ambassador to Brunei Darussalam Xiao Jianguo during the launch of the second Brunei-China Art Visual Culture Festival at Baiduri Bank’s headquarters lobby and community hub yesterday. The festival, jointly organised by the Embassy of China in Brunei Darussalam, the Foreign Affairs Office of Nanjing Municipality and Huifong’s Art Gallery of Brunei, was held in conjunction with His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s 78th birthday celebration and Brunei Darussalam’s 40th National Day celebration. PHOTO: RAFI ROSLI Meanwhile, Vice Chairman of Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) Nanjing Committee Wu Weiguo said, “Brunei has been an important partner along the Maritime Silk Road with China since ancient times. As early as the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC-24 AD) of China, our ancestors have carried out exchanges through Maritime Silk Road and written a beautiful chapter of friendship.” Meanwhile, Ng Huifong said that *‘Bagai Aur Dengan Tebing’*, a local Malay proverb, denotes a friendship of benevolence and peaceful coexistence and that it “describes the friendship between Brunei and China most aptly as Brunei-China relations have been deeply rooted in history and date back to more than 2,000 years, with merchants from both countries trading as early as China’s Western Han Dynasty”. Permanent Secretary (Sports) at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports Pengiran Mohd Amirrizal bin Pengiran Haji Mahmud, the guest of honour, officiated the launch with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. He was joined by Xiao Jianguo, Wu Weiguo, Baiduri Bank Chief Executive Officer Ti Eng Hui and Ng Huifong. Following the launch, the event saw a range of performances including traditional Malay cultural dance, silat and wushu as well as Jawi and Chinese calligraphy live demonstrations. – James Kon
