James Kon Mohammad Aiman bin Johari from Duli Pengiran Muda Al-Muhtadee Billah College (MDPMAMB) who scored four A\* in all ‘A’ Level subjects was on top of the world yesterday. He was among the 234 students nationwide who obtained exceptional results last year and were presented with outstanding achievers’ awards during a ceremony organised by the Ministry of Education through the Department of Schools, Department of Examinations, the Department of Private Education and the Department of Special Education. “I can’t describe my feelings now. This is a highly prestigious award and honestly I am proud of receiving this recognition because I have worked really hard for this,” he said. Held at the Bridex Hall, Minister of Education, Datin Seri Paduka Dr Hajah Romaizah binti Haji Mohd Salleh, the guest of honour presented the prizes. On the challenges during COVID-19, Mohammad Aiman said, “COVID-19 affected us in early 2020 and again in mid-2021. The year 2020 is when I began my studies at MDPMAMB and it was hard to adapt. I didn’t know any of my classmates or teachers because classes were conducted online. Once we were able to adapt, it was easier for us to focus on the syllabus. We didn’t expect another wave in 2021. Always work hard and work smart. You need to know when to stop and rest. Don’t force yourself. After a break, you will feel refreshed and can focus better.” The 19-year-old who wants to be a medical engineer, will be heading overseas to further his studies. Liow Jia Shiuan from Chung Hwa Middle School who achieved outstanding results in ‘O’ Level exam with 13A\* and 1A said; “I feel honoured to receive this outstanding award. After 14 years of studying, it’s an achievement to be recognised.” Liow Jia Shiuan, who plans to be a doctor shared, “It was a combination of online and physical face-to-face lessons during the COVID- 19 pandemic which was not easy to adapt. In 2021, the August outbreak raised uncertainty among students if examinations were going to be held. This impacted the students’ mental health. To overcome this, we had to have a positive mindset. We continued to study and revise.” On her approach to revision, the 17-year- old said, “It’s time management. A student has to revise early and not wait for the last moment. A study plan or timetable on revision is important.” Despite her physical disability, Nurzahirah Athirah binti Abdullah Zakiah from Sayyidina Ali Secondary School, received a Special Award from the Department of Special Education. She said she couldn’t believe that she was one of the recipients. During COVID-19, the 20-year-old said, “It was not easy to focus during online classes. With support from my family and teachers, I managed to overcome this challenge.” Her message is always respect others and if you don’t understand the subject, ask for help and research. Nurzahirah Athirah is pursuing her studies at Belait Sixth Form Centre. Jigsaw Primary School saw one of its students, Muhammad Amir Razin bin Mohammad Azhan, receiving the Student Excellence Award for Primary School Assessment (PSR) 2021, presented by the minister. The school’s CEO and Principal Helen Chin, and senior teacher Hill Zaini, as well as Muhammad Amir Razin’s parents attended the event to celebrate his achievement. Muhammad Amir Razin is also shortlisted for the Lower Secondary Scholarship Scheme (Years 7 – 11) to Jerudong International School and International School Brunei under the Government of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam for the 2021/2022 Academic Year. Muhammad Amir Razin’s sister, who is also the school’s alumni, was also awarded the same scholarship scheme in 2020. The categories awarded were Excellence in BC-GCE ‘A’ Level, International Baccalaureate, Excellence in BC-GCE ‘O’ Level/ IGCSE, Pearson BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate, Excellence in PSR and Special Awards from the Department of Special Education.
