Rokiah Mahmud Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah hosted the 19th edition of its Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration with a vibrant ceremony held at the International Convention Centre (ICC), Berakas recently. Centred on the theme ‘Empowering the Involvement of Community in Achieving Brunei Vision 2035’ the event was further enlivened with the participation of children and youth in performances on stage. The stage performances saw almost 200 students from the Taman Asuhan Kanak-Kanak (TASKA) Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah (YSHHB), YSHHB Primary School and YSHHB Secondary School along with their teachers show casing their talents in singing and dancing. The performances were made more vibrant and colourful with assistance from the Culture and Arts Division of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS). In an interview with the *Borneo Bulletin*, one of the committee members in charge of the *gulingtangan* performance, Muhammad Zulfadhli bin Harun, highlighted that it was an honour and a proud moment to see the success and happy faces of the students when they performed in front of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam and other members of the royal family. ![](https://media.everythingbrunei.com/public/J2u4pBt16SNDh9esMKGGF-sSF3t_Bnw_zzKdZS5qggZ.jpeg) Students performing a Malay traditional dance. PHOTOS: ADIB NOOR AND ROKIAH MAHMUD ![](https://media.everythingbrunei.com/public/P7CcPcPNKiORyRcaGSoHZ-6KCOfx2wAMi5AHTLh-2CU.jpeg) Muhammad Zulfadhli explained that they had been making their preparation for the performance a month before Ramadhan. “In forming the *gulingtangan* team, we conducted auditions and invited those students who had interest in playing traditional musical instruments,” he said. “Surprisingly many students turned up for the audition and chose which instruments they wanted to play or try. We conducted the audition and aimed to find those with hidden or potential talents in playing traditional music instruments, namely the *gulingtangan*. We were quite surprised in seeing that many students have come to the audition and showcased their potential in playing the instruments,” he said. “The gulingtangan instruments not only comprise the *gulingtangan* itself, but also included the *gendang* and gong as well as other modern musical instruments. For the modern instruments, we gave the students chords and notes for them to try. During the trial audition, we wanted to see how far they could read the notes and how well they could play according to the given chords. “*Alhamdulillah*, these students are very talented and have potential to go further, however, we could only select a few of them to form a gulingtangan group,” he added. On the selection process, Muhammad Zulfadhli said that it was based on their auditions, as they got to choose which instrument they had the potential to play. At the same time, as their coach, Muhammad Zulfadhli provided guidance especially on the movement of their hands so that it would produce a soothing and well-balanced rhythm. “*Alhamdulillah*, these students are very enthusiastic and eager to learn,” he said. One of the techniques he used was a clapping activity so that the students would be able to follow the tempo. “Once they got the tempo, we then played the music with myself as the music conductor. Aside from that, I also guided them by showing several steps and methods on how to play the music, and they follow the steps with ease,” added Muhammad Zulfadhli. Apart from the *gulingtangan* performance, the celebration also enlivened with a stage presentation delivered in four languages, namely Malay, Arabic, English and Mandarin by children from TASKA YSHHB, where the speech that was delivered expressed gratitude to Allah the Almighty for the leadership of His Majesty. The speech also shared and acknowledged that His Majesty’s leadership has brought the nation closer in achieving Brunei Vision 2035. Meanwhile, the secondary students stole the show with a choir performance school titled *Abode of Peace*, featuring seven ethnic groups in the Sultanate followed with medleys of children’s songs and traditional dances.
