Chief Justice Dato Seri Paduka Steven Chong stated that family hardship cannot be a factor in determining the appropriate sentence for a crime. The offender, Zailin bin Haji Jimbol, pleaded guilty to possessing and trafficking methylamphetamine. He had previously been convicted of drug consumption three times. The Magistrate's initial sentence of seven years' imprisonment with five whippings was deemed lenient by the High Court.
