In today’s world, where we’re constantly glued to our screens, the art of storytelling still holds a special kind of magic that can captivate anyone, no matter their age. Even though we’re used to consuming stories through our phones and computers, there’s something truly enchanting about a storyteller who can make a tale comes alive and draw you into the adventure. Skilled storytellers have this unique ability to make us feel like we’re part of the story, making the experience much more memorable and engaging. These were some of the key lessons shared with a group of librarians at a recent seminar-workshop at the Language and Literature Bureau (DBP) Kampong Pandan Library. The event, part of an ongoing initiative, aimed to spark imagination and inspire young minds by equipping librarians with the art of storytelling, encouraging children to explore the world through the magic of stories. At its core, storytelling has the power to transport listeners to different worlds. A skilled storyteller can weave words so masterfully that you can almost see, hear, and feel the story unfolding around you. By painting vivid pictures with their words and infusing their tales with emotion, storytellers create experiences that captivate and engage. This goes beyond simple entertainment; it forms a deep connection with the characters and the plot, making you feel like you’re part of the story. Fatin Nadhirah binti Haji Ariffin, a library officer who led the recent workshop, emphasised that storytelling is one of the library’s reading programmes. She also noted that storytelling helps librarians build connections with patrons, making the library feel more welcoming and accessible. “As the library has become a community place where people can come together to participate in events and programmes as well as to express their creativity.” One of the unique benefits of live storytelling compared to platforms like YouTube or TikTok is the interactivity it provides. While videos on these platforms usually involve passive viewing, live storytelling is a dynamic exchange between the storyteller and the audience. As Fatin Nadhirah explained, this interaction makes the experience much more engaging and personal. “Storytelling sessions in libraries provide direct, in-person interaction with the storyteller and children, fostering a sense of community and connection that is often lacking in digital formats. “There is interactive participation as children can ask questions, share their thoughts, and participate in activities related to the story such as crafts or group discussions, enhancing their engagement and comprehension.” Fatin Nadhirah pointed out that without the visual stimuli of videos, children are encouraged to use their imagination to picture the story. This can significantly enhance their creativity and cognitive development. “Library storytelling sessions include activities like drawing, acting out parts of the story, or creating their own stories, which further stimulates creativity.” Moreover, the interaction and feedback between the storyteller and the audience create a more personalised and impactful experience, fostering a deeper connection to the story. These personalised storytelling sessions allow children to explore fantastical worlds, meet extraordinary characters, and embark on adventures that ignite their creativity during their formative years and beyond. Skilled storytellers are adept at tailoring their approach to suit different age groups, ensuring that every child, regardless of age, can connect with and enjoy the story. This ability to adjust their storytelling to the audience’s level of knowledge and awareness is crucial for making the experience truly engaging and memorable. “For preschools, choosing big books with vibrant illustrations, and relatable characters can help to drive engagement. Whereas for elementary schools stories with more complex plots, rich vocabulary, and diverse themes would be introduced such as folktales and adventure stories. “As for children from nine to 12 years old, stories with more intricate plots and themes that provoke thought and discussion will be introduced.” Furthermore, Fatin Nadhirah also shed light on some of the tips and tricks employed by storytellers to deliver a compelling narrative to children. “The librarian has to familiarise and understand the story well, understand the audience, using props, audio aids to match moods in the story, vary pitch and tone to match the different characters, and by incorporating interactive elements such as asking questions, inviting predictions or encourage physical participation like clapping or miming actions.” As another example of storytelling’s impact, the Tourism Development Department recently hosted a three-day workshop to equip tour guides with the skills to offer unforgettable experiences to tourists. This demonstrates that storytelling goes beyond igniting imagination; it is also a powerful educational tool with wide-reaching applications. For those aspiring to become storytellers, Fatin Nadhirah emphasised the importance of exposing oneself to a variety of storytelling genres. She suggested observing how experienced storytellers structure their narratives and develop characters to engage the audience. This, she noted, is key to improving one’s own storytelling abilities. “It is also important to make the session interactive by asking questions, calling and responding with physical gestures to involving the audience in the storytelling process. “In addition, try to connect with the audience by tapping into relatable experiences and universal themes.” As a gateway to imagination, learning, and personal growth; storytelling and storytellers continue to play a major role in encouraging and inspiring young minds to dream big, think critically, and embrace the world with curiosity and compassion. – Daniel Lim
