His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s State Visit to the Republic of Peru on Tuesday, at the invitation of President of Peru Dina Ercilia Boluarte Zegarra marked His Majesty’s first State Visit to the Latin-American and Caribbean region. During their working meeting, both leaders discussed enhancing bilateral cooperation and mutual interests, celebrating the strong and friendly relations established since 1990. They explored various avenues for collaboration, underscoring their shared commitment to bolstering ties in trade, investment, energy, climate change, and people-to-people exchanges. According to a Joint Statement issued by both nations following the State Visit, the leaders agreed to strengthen partnerships in education, culture, energy, and agriculture. PHOTO: INFOFOTO His Majesty and President Boluarte emphasised the importance of boosting trade and investment, leveraging their shared membership in the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). Brunei invited Peru to use its strategic position to expand business into Southeast Asia, while Peru encouraged Brunei to invest in its upcoming Multimodal Logistics Industrial and Technological Hub. Both nations also agreed to enhance cooperation in the agriculture and agri-food sectors, aiming to facilitate the entry of products into their respective markets. **Energy and climate change** The leaders discussed exploring energy cooperation and shared best practices. They also highlighted the pressing need for joint efforts in climate change mitigation, acknowledging increased natural disasters and promoting collaboration through the ASEAN Centre for Climate Change. **Promoting people-to-people ties** Acknowledging the importance of cultural and educational exchanges, both leaders expressed interest in establishing linkages between higher education institutions and promoting tourism. They reaffirmed their commitment to a cultural cooperation programme to foster deeper understanding and strengthen ties between their countries. **Judicial and parliamentary collaboration** His Majesty and President Boluarte welcomed increased judicial and parliamentary cooperation, following the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding on Judicial Cooperation. This includes sharing best practices and facilitating exchanges between judicial bodies and legislative councils. **Regional and global partnerships** The Sultan and President Boluarte discussed Peru’s status as an “ASEAN Development Partner,” conferred in January 2024, and praised Peru’s successful chairmanship of APEC 2024. They reiterated the importance of multilateralism, adherence to international law, and promoting international trade and South-South cooperation. **Commitment to joint candidatures** Both leaders committed to enhancing coordination and mutual support for their respective candidacies in international forums and organisations. **Special honours and acknowledgments** In recognition of His Majesty’s contributions, President Boluarte conferred the prestigious “Grand Collar” of the Order “El Sol del Perú” on the Sultan. His Majesty expressed his gratitude for the honour, highlighting the award as a testament to the enduring friendship between Brunei and Peru.
