Local sentenced to 20 months’ jail for mischief, theft

A 39-year-old local was sentenced to 20 months in prison yesterday by the Magistrate’s Court after he pleaded guilty to charges of mischief and theft in two separate incidents.

Waliuddin bin Hassan has a history of property-related offences dating back to 1999, according to prosecutor Abdul Musawwir bin Haji Mahli. Magistrate Syaffina binti Shahif took into account his multiple previous convictions on handing sentence.

The first charge against Waliuddin occurred on July 11 when he deliberately caused damage to a window at a clinic by throwing a rock.

The estimated cost of repairing the window was BND200. The act was captured on CCTV, and Waliuddin later admitted to the crime during police investigations, citing frustration as  his motive.

The second charge took place on August 10 at a department store in Kampong Bebatik Kilanas. Waliuddin was caught on CCTV stealing a can of coconut drink and a two-kilogramme packet of beverage. After consuming the drink inside the store, he concealed the empty can and hid the packet of drink under his clothes before leaving without paying. The stolen packet of drink was later sold in Kampong Mulaut but recovered by the authorities. – Fadley Faisal
