A lawyer has discharged herself in a case involving a customs officer on allegations of committing criminal breach of trust to the tune of almost BND1 million yesterday.
Assistant Superintendent of Customs Suyati binti Haji Ahmad Besar had denied three charges of criminal breach of trust by a public servant.
Defence counsel Iman Hanisah binti Dato Paduka Haji Hisham of Messrs Brahms Omar, who earlier represented Suyati, has discharged herself from representation. Intermediate Court Judge Radin Safiee bin Radin Mas Basiuni adjourned the case to September 26, giving way to the defendant who sought for time to seek a new lawyer.
The defendant’s BND10,000 bail, or in two local sureties was extended.
Prosecutors’ charges drafted based on the Anti-Corruption Bureau investigations allege that Suyati, while she was attached to the Finance Unit of the Royal Customs and Excise Department (RCED) as the head of finance, misappropriated BND982,349.12 in cash, payments of overtime, mileage and shift allowance claims made by the RCED officers. – Fadley Faisal
