Efforts to solve sustainability challenges require leaders from private and public sectors as well as communities to collaborate and develop innovative solutions for meaningful change. This calls for a whole-of-society approach, where governments, businesses, civil society and academia come together in a shared commitment in climate action and sustainable development. The need for a whole-of-society approach in tackling climate change and sustainability challenges was highlighted by Deputy Minister of Finance and Economy (Fiscal) Pengiran Datin Seri Paduka Hajah Zety Sufina binti Pengiran Dato Paduka Haji Sani at the opening ceremony of the 4th International Conference on Business, Economics and Finance 2023 at the Senate Room of Universiti Brunei Darussalam yesterday. “It has long been an undeniable fact that the planet we call home has been sending us unmistakable signals in the form of rising temperatures, disappearing glaciers, extreme weather conditions and increasingly frequent natural disasters,” Pengiran Datin Seri Paduka Hajah Zety Sufina said on climate change and current global challenges. “This is amplified by disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and geopolitical conflicts which have resulted in new global concerns over energy, food security, supply chain vulnerabilities and inflationary prices,” she added. “The unpredictable nature of our reality has presented nations with the gravest challenge of our time – building a future that champions a green economy as an alternative path for development while at the same time enhancing living standards through sustainable and inclusive growth.” ![](https://media.everythingbrunei.com/public/Kz-B7--Hpt5emNteRignu-ghJX39_SkFGFpPReYHfqh.jpeg) Deputy Minister of Finance and Economy (Fiscal) Pengiran Datin Seri Paduka Hajah Zety Sufina binti Pengiran Dato Paduka Haji Sani delivers her speech. PHOTO: JAMES KON Pengiran Datin Seri Paduka Hajah Zety Sufina also said the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development introduced in 2015 “reinforced this urgent need to shift from traditional economic and business models to address sustainability and resilience issues across economic, social and environmental dimensions”. She added, “The theme of this conference underscores the importance of sustainable practices in the world of business, economics, finance and the enabling role of the regulatory environment in providing a transparent framework for relevant stakeholders to adhere to.” She also said, ”It is heartening to see an increasing number of businesses embracing sustainability as a core value, recognising that long-term profitability is inextricably linked to the health of our planet.“ Sustainable finance instruments “are gaining traction with the mobilisation of new capital for environmental initiatives and green lending products”, she added. “Economic models that prioritise environmental and social responsibility are emerging as leaders in their fields. “Investment in innovative green technologies and adoption of nature based solutions are considered vital to scale up our decarbonisation and carbon removal efforts towards a net zero pathway. “Moreover, emphasis on integrated planning combined with inclusive policies aligned with local needs are key in ensuring that such transitions are resilient and community focused.” Datin Seri Paduka Hajah Zety Sufina hoped the conference provides a platform to harness the collective wisdom of diverse perspectives, “and our openness to share knowledge, experiences, and best practices will be the key to unlocking synergistic actions that drive us toward a sustainable green future. “With constructive dialogue, the country can foster creative business opportunities, enhance institutional effectiveness and strengthen public-private partnerships”. – James Kon
