The Embassy of China in Brunei Darussalam held a ceremony marking China Day, the embassy’s flagship programme at Chung Hwa Middle School, Bandar Seri Begawan yesterday. The event coinciding with the embassy’s Spring Festival served as a platform to get to know more about China. Chinese Ambassador to Brunei Darussalam Xiao Jianguo highlighted the strong relationship between China and Brunei. He pointed out that the two countries are neighbours across the sea, trustworthy friends and partners of common development, with high-level political trust, high-quality practical cooperation, and ever-lasting friendship. “Last November in San Francisco, our two heads of state had a second bilateral meeting within one year and reached important consensus. In 2023, bilateral trade reached USD2.81 billion.” He added the Belt and Road projects like Hengyi Industries Sdn Bhd and Muara Port Company Sdn Bhd injected more impetus in the economic diversification. The envoy also stressed on Brunei’s export of agricultural and fishery products to China. Meanwhile, Chinese Enterprises Association in Brunei President Dr Li Feng spoke about the memorandum of understanding for the Hengyi Phase II construction, the expansion of the Muara Port and the bilateral economy and trade that will see new development. “We will work together for the national development of Brunei, fulfilling social responsibilities, promoting business operations to a new level as well as making new and greater contributions to the economic and trade development of the two countries,” said the president. Permanent Secretary (Community) at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS) Hajah Nor Ashikin binti Haji Johari, Permanent Secretary (Sports) at the MCYS Pengiran Mohd Amirrizal bin Pengiran Haji Mahmud and diplomatic corps members were among the guests. The event was marked with the beating of the drum led by the ambassador along with the permanent secretaries and guests followed by the traditional lion and dragon dance. Meanwhile, the embassy also hosted a Spring Festival open house, where Xiao Jianguo highlighted the cultural significance of the Spring Festival, marking the beginning of the lunar year and symbolising life and hope. The ambassador thanked the Brunei-China Friendship Association, the Chinese Enterprises Association, and Chung Hwa Middle School for the support. In December last year, the ambassador added, during the 78th session of the United Nation General Assembly (UNGA) officially listed Spring Festival as a UN floating holiday, elevating its global designation. He said it is a reflection of the profound and inclusive charm of Chinese civilisations, and a vivid practise of the global civilisation initiative, which advocates exchanges and mutual learning to promote the progress of humanity. Meanwhile, Dr Li Feng emphasised the Chinese New Year’s significance as the most important Chinese festival, cherished for family reunion traditions. He added Chinese communities both locally and globally welcome the new year with festive celebration, including lion dances, family visits, joining Yusheng and open house gatherings.
